iMac on a wireless network
« on: June 06, 2002, 05:13:30 AM »
I have been told that one cannot have a Mac and a PC communicate with one another or use the same gateway for internet access on a wireless LAN.

This is a solicitation for your response:  Yeah or Nay?

I have a client who ?needs? to switch from a Mac to a PC just so she can do the above.  Can I save her some money by using SME as the gateway hardwired into a wireless hub?  Am I way off in left field?

I have an appointment with her on Friday AM June 7th.

As I consider this forum to host the cream o' the crop of internetters,
I appreciate your responses and thank you greatly in advance.

It depends.  The Apple Airport cards are just 802.11b cards, so they will work on most 802.11b networks.  Where you usually run into problems is with WEP.  I have never tried to do WEP on a Mac, so I don't know what types of encryption they support.  If the Mac will only do 64 bit encryption and the network requires 128 bit...

There may be some other issues, but that's all that comes to mind right off.  Ask whoever said the user had to switch why they said it.
