Now this is wierd...

Here I am at work, checking my webmail this morning on my server at home.  Go to send a message from IMP and after a long timeout period I get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed".  OK, then I try to get back to my Inbox, no go...    Then I went to my main page, http was still working, OK, not a ISP issue.  Tried my tightvnc address, can get one of the desktops behind the firewall.  Try to SSH in, connected, asked for login:  now I can't connect via SSH locally or remotely.  Just checked http and now it's not serving the main sites either.  Strange as strange can be.
So here's what I know, all internet services have stopped internally and externally, no FTP, http, https or ssh.  Port forwarding is still working so the internet link and box itself are still up.

Hopefully when I get home I'll be able to plug in a monitor and access the local console port and shut down properly.

Any ideas what may be happening over there right now?

Anybody ever heard of the dreaded Western Digital drive clicking noise?  I got home and that's indeed what my living room sounded like, click-click-click from the drive.
It's funny, I still had net access and port forwarding was still running, but if a function required the drive it was no longer running, hence no console either.  Had to power down and boot back up, run fsck, found lots of errors, drive probably needs to be replaced now.
Everything seems to be running, for now!

yes. How long have you had the drive? if lest that a year take it back or call western digital. the drver has crashed and unless you want to send $1000 to recover it or fix i would go out and return it or get a new heard drive. more like seagate or IBM they tend to last longer.

I've had the drive for 5 years, it used to do this all the time running NT4, 1st time in 9 months of running SME.  If it dies, it dies, it doesn't owe me anything, and I have a current backup (now).  :)

Terry, I had the same with a Maxtor drive. It worked flawlesly for over 2 years. Because Maxtor has a 4 yr waranty, I pulled it out of the box and when I went to the shop they tested it and the drive was ok!  When I got home I put it back in and it works for almost a year now. Guess the controller on the drive had hung itself up.
