Port Forward Panel Question
« on: June 19, 2002, 11:53:17 PM »
Hi:
Searching through the forums I saw a suggestion that Darrell May's portforward panel might be the easiest way to open ports. I've installed it & have a question - can anyone tell me if I can simply open a port to everyone on the network by leaving out the forwarding IP? It says that's what UDP does, but I'd like to know if it does it for TCP also. Otherwise, I guess I'll need to edit the ipchains templates.
Thanks,
Bobby

Nate

We have to use IBM's Host On Demand java applet & it seems that I need to open ports 8989 & 8999 for it to function. I went ahead & tried to just put the ports in but it still doesn't seem to be working.
Thanks,
Bobby

I don't know much of anything about the Host on Demand, but it should describe how to use it with a firewall--the e-smith is just a standard firewall.  It may help if you describe your network set-up, where the host on demand server is, where the e-smith is located, and where the client computers are located.

All the company running the Host on Demand software says is that you need to have ports 501, 8989 & 8999 open on your firewall. I have used other versions of this software with other vendors before through the SME box with no difficulties, so these people seem to have a different configuration. The applet is just started via a web browser, the clients are simply behind the SME box. Nothing too fancy.

Those ports 'sound' like they should be open going out to the server, which are all open with e-smith.  Incoming ports need to be bound to a specific ip in the network.

Thanks Nate. I guess if their tech support can't help me more I'll try editing ipchains.
