« on: June 26, 2002, 04:53:27 PM »
I have SME 5.1.2 server running ok on the Internet and have enabled PPTP in the server manager.

I can connect to the server from WinXP Pro machine without any problems and I get an IP address. My servers internal IP is 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 and when i connect via a pptp connection i get 192.168.1.25/255.255.255.255. I cannot pich the server of browse any info on the server.

All settings appear to be correct any ideas what is wrong?

Does the PC have a public or private IP address? If it's a private address, you need to make sure it's not using the same subnet as the SME's LAN.

What exactly do you mean by not being able to pick the server? In Network Neighborhood or \server\share or \123.45.67.89\share, or something else?

Bill

My private server is 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 and I have a dialup modem with a permanent public IP from my ISP ppp0. When a user connects and i do an ifconfig there is a ppp1 which is 192.168.1.25/255.255.255.255.

If the remote client tries to ping the SME servers internal ip address, name, connect to a samba share or a webshare etc....the server is not visible. As the clients pptp connection is on a different subnet to the internal NIC interface it cannot see the SME server.

Hope I explained that well enough.

Thanks

The netmask doesn't matter with PPTP if I remember correctly. It will always be 255.255.255.255.

Is the remote client connecting directly to the internet with a public IP, or is it on a LAN with a shared connection? If it's on its own LAN with the same IPs that the SME's LAN is using, it will cause problems.

Bill

The workstation in the remote site is sitting behind an ADSL connection and another SME box which probably has similar IP range as mine. I will change the remote workstations LAN IP range and see how it goes.

I though that may have been the case but wasn't quite certain....now I am.

Will let you know how it goes.
