backup from Web manager probs
« on: March 17, 2001, 03:12:32 AM »
I have tried to backup the Server from the selection 'Miscellaneous - Backup or restore'.
Once this selection is clicked, I get the 'please wait' Web page and the Server HDD starts doing lots of something as indicated by the access light...
After about 3-4 minutes, I get 'this page contains no data, etc...' dialog box appear on the workstation, the server stops the HDD access and I get nothing else.
I have rebooted the Server and also looked for a timeout setting on both IE and Netscape to wait longer for the Server to respond, to no avail.

What can I do to backup the Server? What is happening here and why the long wait?

Thanks.

Just for clarification sake, this is a 4.0 or a 4.0.1 installation?

Is this from the first screen?  i.e. Where you choose 'Backup'/'Restore'. Or the second screen? Where you would be asked to choose a file location?

Your description sounds like the former, where you have selected 'Backup' and then it waits before showing the next screen.  Which has no calculations or anything, so it shouldn't be timing out at all.  If anything should - and it shouldn't - then it would be after choosing to do the backup (over the network) because that is when it actually starts to perform.  It does, however need to calculate the size of the backup.  Any idea how much data is on there?

If you can login to the server as user 'root', trying typing:

rpm -V e-smith-base

What results do you get?

Sorry about that, the version is 4.0 and yes, I am on the initial screen, as
the browser times out waiting for a response from the Server, which never
comes and I do not get to the next screen to select the workstation to load
onto.

Total disk size is 7.47Gb, with 5.96Gb free. This is from a W98 workstation,
so I do not know how it handles software, User directories, etc.. in this
figure. Will give you some indication though.

I did the rpm -V-e-smith-base, the results are...
.M......    /etc/e-smith
.M......    /etc/e-smith/events
.M......    /etc/e-smith/events/actions
.M......    /etc/e-smith/events/console-save
.M......    /etc/e-smith/events/ip-change
.M......    /etc/e-smith/templates
.M......    /etc/e-smith/templates/etc
.M......    /etc/e-smith/templates/etc/inittab

The last thing I was trying to do over 2 weeks ago, was to get the Telstra
Bigpond cable to work on the e-Smith.  I tried all combinations of software
and configurations and still could not get it to work... So I gave up on it
for now.

Thanks for the help.

It works just fine - I rolled a new version of e-smith-bpalogin
today to tidy things up a little more.

At ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib you will find
these two RPMs:

CharlieBrady/RPMS/i386-RH6.2/bpalogin-1.3-2.i386.rpm
GordonRowell/RPMS/noarch/e-smith-bpalogin-1.1.0-02.noarch.rpm

Install them in that order, and then follow the instructions
from the second one, which are:

This version relies on the following configuration database variables:
    DialupUserAccount
    DialupUserPassword

The simplest way to use this module is:

- Install it
   rpm -ivh e-smith-bpalogin-
- Use the e-smith console to configure the external interface:
    - Select PPPoE
      - Enter your BPA username (just the username, not
   the domain)
      - Enter your BPA password
      - These values are used by bpalogin, but BPA does not
   use PPPoE
    - Select to the external interface configuration
    - Select "DHCP - send Ethernet address"
    - Press to accept all further values and save
   configuration
- Check /var/log/messages for messages with the string "bpalogin"

I installed the 2 packages, no problems there.
I changed the user and password in the /etc/bpalogin.conf file,
still nothing.
tried swapping the NICs around, nothing.
one time I actually saw a DHCP_ACK from some server at Telstra and got excited, still nothing.
I cannot get out to the network...
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

You don't need to edit bpalogin.conf - that's what the second
RPM does automatically.

Did you go to the console and configure for PPPoE and then
reconfigure for "DHCP - send hostname"? If you do this and
then go to the end of the console to "Activate Changes", you
should have a correct bpalogin.conf and appropriate entries
to start bpalogin from init.

I do not have a selection of PPPoE on the console. Are you talking about V4.1.1? I am on V4.0.1.
I cannot get from V4.0.1 to V4.1.1 as I cannot backup correctly, which was the reason I posted the original message in the 1st place. You were kind enough to pick up on the BPA problem I am having as well.
The backup problem has not been resolved yet, so I'm stuck on V4.0.1 for now. Does this present problems?
Therefore, if I do not configure /etc/bpalogin.conf manually, the console and the last .rpm package cannot do this for me. That is why I had to get into it and try to do it manually.

Thanks for your continued attention to this matter.

I left the backup/restore problem alone as that had already
been picked up on. We provide unlimited technical support to
our registered customers, but, as you can understand, we
can't guarantee any answers to unsupported customers.

You can do an in-place upgrade from 4.0.1 to 4.1.1

No, just some more manual steps required.

From the command line (substitute your BigPond account details):

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration set DialupUserAccount frogpond
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration set DialupUserPassword croak
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save

You should also be able to do this from the console by
selecting Dial-up, setting username and password, and then
selecting dedicated - DHCP - send Ethernet address.

I have tried to do all you told me to do, however I cannot do the /sbin/e-smith/ db configuration ... command as there is no 'db' command.
I have also tried to do the 'trick the box' thing by configuring it for a dial-up, entering the user/password, then saved, then changed back to permanent connection, then saved, and still nothing.
I know it is something really basic not happening here, that is stopping this from working, but what?

Thanks.

There should be - it was in 4.0.1 (but not in 4.0)

Anyway, you can use the older style:

/sbin/e-smith/config set DialupUserAccount frogpond
/sbin/e-smith/config set DialupUserPassword croak

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save

I developed this for 4.1 and may have missed something for
4.0.1 compatability.

We'll get there - I probably just forgot something from 4.0.1
days. I'll contact you to find out what's missing.

I'm a nix newbie.

Ok now that is over with

Does this apply to ver 4.1?

Why do you not recommend using the CharlieBrady RPM bpalogin-2.0-1

This seems to me to be a more uptodate RPM.

Does this fix things so that you don't have to apply the two rpm's that you installed?

Thanks for your patience

No need to remove them - just upgrade and then return to
step 1 :-)

The initial instructions are for 4.1 or 4.1.1

The later instructions turn out to be due to Barry having
4.0, not 4.0.1 (or they should have worked).

Sure, but Charlie and I have both found it to be unstable. Later
does not always mean better.

No, you need two RPMs.

The bpalogin RPM is the original bpalogin program.
The e-smith-bpalogin RPM configures it simply in e-smith

The "e-smith way" is to use unmodified RPMs for the underlying
programs and then layer our management framework on top. This
means we don't fork programs into e-smith versions and makes
later upgrade much easier since we don't have to patch other
people's code each time it changes.

Thanks for your prompt reply Gordon.  I followed those instructions but I seem to be stuck at getting my user and password to authenticate to the authentication server because it can't connect to the authentication server.
------below is cut and pasted from another thread I posted on-----

Are you in Victoria?

Because at the moment I am receiving an IP address but I am not successfully logging on.  checking /var/log/messages i found that my bpalogin had not been able to connect to the authentication server.

Then checking the /etc/bpalogin.conf file it says it was using ip
61.9.128.29 as the authentication server.
Resolving this IP I get mer19.vic-remote.bigpond.net.au

But if i try to ping that IP it just says request timed out.

However if i try to ping gigabit-msfc1.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au
I have a successful response.

By doing a tracert to anywhere it seems to first go through a 10.128.8.1 ip then to the nsw-remote one.

This is a guess but is this my authentication server?

Also in the CharlieBrady RPM bpalogin-2.0-1 if i check the associated bpalogin.conf file the authentication server is not shown but there is an option for you to specify your own authentication server.  The example they provide is vic.bigpond.net.au

Obviously I'd use nsw.bigpond.net.au However there isn't the same option in the bpalogin.conf of the bpalogin-1.3-2 RPM.  Within that conf it says refer to templates if you wish to alter anything.  Then checking templates it presents me with the Perl script for generating the IP of the authentication server.

I don't know Perl so i can't really follow this with any degree of certainty.

So where can i define the authentication server I wish to use?

I'm sorry if this was very long winded I just wanted to make it clear what I was doing.

Thanks for your patience.

I just wanted to add that after doing further research and checking at
LinuxBPAlogin

It seems that the authentication server is "dce-server"

So i guess all i want to know is how can i specifiy my authentication server?

The e-smith-bpalogin software gets that IP address from the DHCPSID field on the DHCP data, which you can find in /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth1.info. That was the correct authentication server IP address to use when I developed the software last year.

I notice that dce-server.nsw.bigpond.net.au is 61.9.128.13.

C:\>netstat

Active Connections

Proto  Local Address          Foreign Address        State
  TCP    doopy:1028             spr3.nsw- remote.bigpond.net.au:5050  TIME_WAIT
  TCP    doopy:1031             spr3.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au:5050  TIME_WAIT

That is the netstat response immediately after I use the bpalogin software on my windows2000 box.

resolving the IP of that I get 61.9.192.13.

The only reason i mention this is if i do a ping of dce-server.nsw.bigpond.net.au it says

pinging spr3.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au

and gives the above IP address.

So I pose the question Charlie how did you resolve that above IP address?  i know the only difference is 192 and 128 ......Was this a typo?  Somehow i doubt it, so I'm curious to find out where you got that IP from.

Ok I just figured it out. 61.9.128.13 is mer3.vic-remote.bigpond.net.au

From this I assume your in victoria charlie, even though you resolved dce-server.nsw.bigpond.net.au it probably only looked as far as the dce-server part and shot you to your local dce-server.  I might just be making this all up though on pure guess work.

I'm going to use the spr3.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au
I think that that is the correct authentication server.

One small question is howcome it had two open connections to that address going out from ports 1028 and 1031.  Any idea what that is doing?

I'll try the 61.9.192.13 as my authentication server then report back.

No, it was a typo. I did mean that 61.9.192.13 is dce-server.nsw.bigpond.net.au.

Correct. I'm interested to know whether that appears in the info file in /etc/dhcpc/ directory.

It's doing its authentication chit-chat. TIME_WAIT means that the connection is partway through being closed - they're two defunct connections.

WOOHOOO

Yeah i just got it to work.  Not too bad for a total Linux newbie who didnt' even know how to rename files the night before.

Well for anyone whos' interested i found the authentication server in nsw where i am to be

spr3.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au (61.9.192.13)
and the localport i used was 5050

This FINALLY worked...I feel very happy currently!

Charlie  under DNS there is 61.9.192.13 and it is the first entry.

However, even though i change the DHCPSID entry from 61.9.128.29 to 61.9.192.13 when i rebooted it didn't change and it is set back to how it was.

I had to remove the template 40authserver to another directory and create my own 40authserver with the line
authserver 61.9.192.13

then that worked.....howcome it wouldn't save my changes to the DHCPSID field?

Seems I can establish connections but inbound connections are blocked by my box...that seems very cool!

I like that!
Well currently I have my computers all linked to the network through this wonderful e-smith box and i just wanted to say

Thanks very much to Charlie and Gordon.

The help was muchly appreciated!!!

Thanks for that info, I will use it when I can get over the latest problem...
when I try to either upgrade or de-install the 2 x RPMs for BPAlogin, I get... error package blah not installed.
However, when I try to install either of the 2 packages I get... error package blah already installed.
I tried to force the install and it does it without the 'already installed' message, but I get the same 'not installed' error when I try to query or verify the packages.
Boy, is this server confused.
What can I do to get over this RPM problem?

By the way, the upgrade to 4.1.1 overcame the inability to backup problem.
The system however takes ages to save now. Is this normal?

what I did to try and find out if the package was installed or not was type

rpm -q -a

that will list all the installed packages

Then you can see if it is installed or not.  By the sounds of things if it can't uninstall or upgrade and it says package not installed it errrr....doesn't sound like the package was installed in the first place.

I followed Gordon's instruction in the order of rpm's to install and it went through fine.

Is there an RPM to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.1.1?

If you are in doubt as to what the rpm command can do try

man rpm

No, it's not the server that's confused, it's you. And it's a common confusion, too.

To install an rpm, you do:

rpm -i blah-x.x-1.i386.rpm

To remove the same rpm, you do:

rpm -e blah

or

rpm -e blah-x.x-1

To upgrade the rpm, do:

rpm -U blah-x.x-2.i386.rpm

Thankyou DOOOPY_LOOPY.
I entered the IP address you came up with in the 40authserver file and entered the port 5050. It works....! Port 5051, which was detailed in some previous literature, did not.
Strangely enough, if I entered spr3.etc... in the 40authserver file instead of the IP address, which I did at the beginning, it does not work. I would have thought (caveat:limited knowledge) this should have worked too.
What is the packet dropout rate like, when you ping IP addresses? I am sometimes down to 75% returned on some IP addresses. Is this normal?

I'm not getting any packet loss.

Perhaps it is the IPs your pinging?

i even tried pinging ips in russia...it seems all good to me.

Charlie:  I am curious why the DHCPSID didn't remain changed after i changed it?

I was logged in as root and i used pico to edit it.

Any recommendation on how to optomise performance etc?

PS: If you have a Bigpond Advanced email account which I assume you do you have to change the pop3 and smtp servers from pop-server and mail-hub to pop-server.nsw.bigpond.net.au and mail-hub.nsw.bigpond.net.au

There is another thread here about a more permanent fix by someone Lloyd...search for it I think that solution is a permanent one.  Whereas my solution only fixes mail not the /www. web addresses.

This is odd, and I'd like to work out how to fix it
automatically. It works properly straight after an install
for me (and I'm in NSW as well).

It's a chicken&egg problem - e-smith's DNS may not know about
that name at that stage. You can fix this with the "Hostnames
and Addresses" page (put the entry in there), but the
e-smith-bpalogin module should get it right - that's what
it's there for. It works out (or should work out) the correct
information from the DHCP lease.

It's still not working as it should, and I'd like help from
you and DOOPY_LOOPY (and others) to make it work automatically.
You should just have to install the two RPMs and then configure
for PPPoE and then for DHCP - send Ethernet.

Would you be able to send me via email:
   /etc/bpalogin.conf      # Remove user password
   /etc/dhcpc/dhcpd-eth1.info

If there are people using BPA in Melbourne, Brisbane or
elsewhere, I would like the same from you as well.

sure thing Gordon I'd like to see it working properly for you too.

Did you note that it didn't save the change to DHCPSID?

Why might that be?  I had to edit the 40authserver totally to just say

authserver 61.9.192.13

i kept a copy of the old 40authserver though.

Do you want it emailed to your e-smith email i assume?

Sent the dhcpcd-eth1.info and bpalogin.conf.

I sent this to gordonr@e-smith.com

Hope this helps.

"/etc/dhcpc/dhcpd-eth1.info" is not a configuration file, it is a data file containing DHCP lease information. The DHCPSID information is what BigPond's DHCP server sent you. I assumed that DHCPSID would always correspond to the IP address of the authentication server - perhaps that assumption was invalid.

Charlie replied to this - DHCP rewrites the dhcpd-eth1.info file
when it renews leases.

You should do this by making a copy in
/etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/bpalogin.conf
and editing the copy.

But you don't even need to do that, you can do:

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop bpalogin
   Authserver {ipadd of your Authserver}
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event ip-change
   $(/sbin/e-smith/config get ExternalIP)

Note: those are two lines, folded for the Phorum.

Thanks - received.

It is curious - DHCPSID is correct for me, but wrong for you.
I am looking at a way to fix this, but it probably won't be
for a few days.

Thanks for your help and testing.

When you say DHCPSID is correct for you do you mean that 61.9.128.29 works as the correct authorisation server or do you mean that your DHCPSID reads 61.9.192.13(spr3.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au)?

I'll leave you to it!

The latter. I have also moved my machine across town to
a completely different router (wildly different IP) and
it was correct at both places.

I'll let you (and the board) know when I've looked into it.

Oops. Sorry. That will not work. The Authserver is
set (wrongly for some people) from dhcpd-eth1.info

For now, please create

/etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/bpalogin.conf/40authserver

containing one line

authserver aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the correct IP address for your
auth server.

Thanks,

Gordon

yeah already done man.......

This is from email you sent me just trying to keep all the communications in one place.

>I think we need to work out the IP of dce-server.{DOMAIN} - I'm looking into
>that, but probably not for a day or two.

When you say "we" do you mean the package/program bpalogin or do you mean you and Charlie?

just curious.....

dce-server for nsw.bigpond.net.au domain is 61.9.192.13    spr3.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au

dce-server for vic.bigpond.net.au domain is 61.9.128.13     mer3.vic-remote.bigpond.net.au

dce-server for qld.bigpond.net.au domain is 61.9.208.13    bcr3.qld-remote.bigpond.net.au

dce-server for sa.bigpond.net.au domain is 61.9.224.13      afr3.sa-remote.bigpond.net.au

Hmm I didnt' expect that last one to come out......perhaps this means that they're expanding they're cable operations to Adelaide?

I also tried WA and NT and TAS but none of them came out not surprising.

Yeah well they are all the BPA Cable authentication servers as far as I'm aware.  It's interesting that your DHCPSID is 61.9.192.13(correct) no matter where you take your machine.

Are you using those exact RPMs that you advised above?

Well anyone having problems in whatever state they are the IP's  I'm not sure of the ports but i assume it is 5050....either that or 5051.

What port are you using Gordon?

Soz for all the messages just find this really fascinating...I'll stop apologising now.

Thanks for the info Gordon et Charlie.

Sure. That was more for the consumption of others following this
thread.

No, bpalogin does not need to be touched. It's the
e-smith-bpalogin module which configures (should configure)
/etc/bpalogin.conf which needs to be revised.

Thanks. Those addresses are useful for now, but we should be
able to do it all automagically. I don't want to hard-code
anything - I want the e-smith-bpalogin module to work it
out, in case the authservers move (esp. since they are aliases
for other machines).

Naturally.

Yes, I'm going to do some research on that as well.

5051.

There is absolutely no need to apologise when you provide
detailed reports and even do the research for authserver IPs
you did.

And thank you.

Hi,

I am having trouble getting the BPALOGIN to work. Could someone help me to get the DHCP working correctly, as I am not getting the correct IP assigned to me. Do i have to change the E-Smith templates (resolv.conf) ?

Cheers

What is the "correct" IP address? AFAIK, there is no way to ask for a static address from BigPond cable, and so you get whatever you are assigned. It is normally static for very long periods (weeks/months).

No, you shouldn't have to.

I'm going to move further discussion to this thread:

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=10572.msg39910#msg39910

This thread was about manager problems and bpalogin is also not a standard part of the product at this time.

I'm running 4.0.12, and have the same problem. My local e-smith guru checked for me, and said
"the rpm command gave a bunch of errors that indicate files are missing.
Guess what - they seem to be e-smith webpanel files :-("

On any other webpanel link, the 'please wait' comes up, then the page comes up fine. On the backup/restore link, the 'please wait' comes up, then stays until timeout, just like Barry Rogers' problem (from what I gather).

I have done no tinkering/customising to the webpanel (in fact, very little to the whole installation really)

Cheers,
Greg.
