Has anyone got this Answering Machine working on E-Smith?

Hi,  I have setup Lintad on a E-Smith 5.1.2.  You have the install a lot of thing. But talk with "fran Sabolish", the creator, he help me a lot to setup it.  You can reach him at the address on the Sourceforge page.

Do you need a physical soundcard in your machine? Or is it all software?

No you need to install a soft modem. Lintad uses that for the audio functions. You also need an external modem. The external modem detects the rings and the soft modem does the audio functions. I tried to compile lintad and gave up in the end.
Have you looked at http://vocp.sourceforge.net/.
I sort of got this working last week and haven't got back to it to complete it.

At http://vocp.sourceforge.net it says:
REQUIREMENTS:
1 Linux or any OS that can run a recent version of Perl and vgetty
2 Perl. A working version of perl (version 5 or better probably)
3 Vgetty. Go here for more info on getting and running mgetty/vgetty
4 A voice modem! (be sure to see the info on vgetty, for compatibility)

Requirements 1,2 and 3 i've got, but number 4?
Looking at the defenition of Voice Modem:
A voice modem is a modem that is capable of playing and recording audio over a telephone line. While almost all modems are data and fax capable, more and more also have voice capabilities. Common brands include US Robotics, 3Com, ZOOM, ModemBlaster and others.

Guess I'll have to let go of this idea

Why? Why not get a voice capable modem?

Jon,

I'm really interested in this.  Any thoughts about working up a how-to?  It doesn't look like it will receive faxes, but said something about working with other fax software.  Presumably a combination with Hylafax or some such app would make a good project.

I'll give it a shot this weekend and see how far I can get.

Thanks,
Abe

Did you ever get an answer on a howto or a packaged install?  I too am about to attempt vocp on 5.1.2.
