Hi,
I have the same problem! I want to upgrade to 4.1.1 but am afraid of damaging my 4.0.1 system. So I am trying to move version 4.0.1 to a newer machine with a fresh install of 4.1.1. I am using a Mac to do the backup.

I was able to restore to 4.1.1 once but was unable to see users in the manager. I have made several unsuccessfull attempts since.

In addition, it seems my backup results from 4.0.1 are not consistent with what I have seen in past backups. What I have seen before is a backup report. I no longer get that.
Restore from Netscape completes without notification. File size info is similar to e-smith-manager estimate.
Restore from MSIE gets halfway through the progress bar, then quits with a warning about the file.
I haven't tried backing up from a Windows client yet. Are there any Mac users out there who have successfully restored and/or upgraded to 4.1.1?
The difference between my system now and the previous successful backup attempts is I have added stephen noble's rpm to show PPP status, some other rpms from rpmfind and a perl script called TWiki on top the basic e-smith install. I am wondering if some of these 'extras' could cause the problem.
If so, is rpm -e
sufficient to 'clean up' my system?
If so, what precautions should I take when adding rpm's not a part of e-smith distribution?
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this would be appreciated.
