losing external connection

I've been on the road the last couple months and have had problems with the external interface on my SME box failing for minutes at a time.  This behavior occurred in both 5.1.2 and 5.5.  The SME box has a static IP address.

The external interface doesn't respond to pings or other activity for a period of time -- a few minutes or so is normal -- yet I am *always* able to reach my wireless access point.  Both devices have static IP addresses.

Some more info.  I  have a SDSL connection with a Speedstream 5250.  It runs at half-duplex 10Mbps.  The wireless access point (RG-1000) also defaults to half-duplex 10Mbps.

All public devices -- the SDSL bridge, the access point and the SME box are connected to an unmanaged switch.

I've tried both Intel 82559 (100Mbps) and Tulip (10Mbps) cards for my external interface.

On a lark, I've also run the Tulip at half-duplex and it didn't seem to help.

ifconfig doesn't report any errors either.

Any tips?  It's a subtle problem that I wouldn't have noticed unless I was off my own network.  Again, it's sporadic but it just shouldn't be happening.
