I'm trying to configure E-Smith so we can use WebMail.

Current setup:
    PC1 - E-Smith Server V5.1.2/Gateway/Delegate Server
    PC2 - Microsoft NT40 PDC/Exchange Server V5.0/Backup System
    PC3 - Microsoft File Server/Print Server
~30 Microsoft Clients using Outlook for E-mail/Meetings/Contacts

What I would expect in the "Ideal" world :)
E-mail that is sent to our address would go to the E-Smith server, filter mail, and forward it to the exchage server.
When our users are outside the domain, use webmail as the e-mail interface.
So, I need to synchronize the NT Users and Exchange mail with webmail periodically.

Right now, E-Smith is configured to delagate the mail to the exchange server. I created a login for myself on E-Smith. If I access webmail, I can send mail fine but never receive any since it gets delegated to Exchange. Plus I can't see any mail in my exchange mailbox.

I was considering using Outlook Web Access, but I would rather filter mail in Linux.

Any suggestions?

TIA

The minute you delegate, you bypass all SME users and mailboxes so you can not do what you want without major modifications.

You can:

1) put RAV Anti-Virus on the SME server and scan both inbound and outbound e-mail traffic to/from the Exchange server for viruses.

2) set up both the Exchange Server and SME so that OWA works.

You could use RAV, and maybe some other tools (Spamassasin, procmail, etc) to do some filtering, forward to the Exchange server, then use IMP to pull mail from the Exchange server for Webmail access.  I believe IMP can be configured to check another Imap server.

Also, I use Webmail and find it works well.  You do have to make sure you keep IIS and the OS updated and patched.  If you go with another solution users will lose some features like their calanders and contacts, assuming they are actually using the Corporate mail features of the Exchange server, not just Imap/Pop.

Why not just use OWA? Just curious.

Regarding losing the functionality of calendars and contacts. Does anyone know whether IMP has any modifications to display these as I am quite able to view the data on the public folders etc on the server just not in the most optimal view.chris meredith wrote:
