Topic: 30 gig to 100 gig ... advice requested

Gentlemen and ladies, I broke down and acquired a 100-gigabyte drive to replace the 30-gig drive I've filled up by ripping my CDs (Thanks a lot, Netjuke!).  I also have Gallery and phpBB2 running, as well as bunches of other customizations.

So I'm not too thrilled about the idea of backing up, installing 5.1.2 fresh on the 100-gig drive (5.5 ... not for me, not just yet) and restoring.  Any other options?  All other hardware will stay exactly the same.

How about a simple "dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb"?

how about adding it as a second drive under  dev/hdx /home/files/ibays/yourmusic ?

I've considered that ... but I'd really like to replace the 30 gig rather than adding to it.  The "server" hums reasonably quietly now and I'd prefer not to have to add cooling fans to handle *two* fast, hot drives.  Besides, I already know how to do that ... I wanna do something I've never done before!

Hi,
It sounds like you want to simply copy a 30GB drive to a 100GB drive - with all partitions & boot sectors intact? If so, that should be simple - if you have access to either: Power Quest Drive Image or Partition Magic or Ghost. Any one of them will allow you to "image" an entire hard drive and make the new drive bootable. I've used them for years [their part of my travelpack of software tools on floppy disks]. Drive Image or Partition Magic will cost a few dollars $39 - $69 usually; Ghost you can probably download for free. If you have to buy, I recommend Partition Magic Pro, they usually include Drive Image for free & will allow you to copy or image drives remotely. Good Luck
