Anyone updated, and where are the updates to find? Hard these days to find updates since Mitel dont give a rats ass about us running 4.12 anymore

Hi Dan,

  Yes, its true, but 4.1.2 is the only release that uses an standard and official RH kernel. Many of us are tied to this situation as some hardware manufacturers just release their drivers for official releases. Yes, I know updates are official too, but they dont seem to see it the same way. As SME doesnt add many features some of us still keep those 4.1.2 running untill a new release really make us switch.

  I hope with SME 5.6 (or 6.0) most of us will do such a change as it is agan a RH kernel standard and has plenty of new "internal" features (new kernel, bla, bla, bla).

Go to http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2002-160.html and download and install (rpm -Uvh ...) RPMs  under the "Red Hat Linux 6.2 i386" section.

I kew it, I was just pointing that many people is stuck into 4.1.2 because of lack of hardware support in some SME releases. Just that.

Not true. Every release uses a standard and official RH kernel.

SME 5.6beta1 uses a standard RH kernel, but of course we don't use the original 7.3 kernel, we use a later update which includes important bug and security fixes.

I'd recommend that you avoid using hardware from manufacturers which don't issue drivers compatible with up to date kernels.

Dan, please stop swearing (MS) ,

I dont really see the point where im forced to change from 4.12 to 5.X to get any updates at all. Reason is simple, 4.12 is awesome! (imo the best for me). O yeah, dont get me wrong here, i have tested with 5.X, and come to the conclusion, that it was glue-slow (on this PII 400 - 128mb RAM), while 4.12 works superb.

Dang, I guess I have to stop running 5.1.2 and 5.5 on these P133, P166, and P200 systems. I even have an old P90 with 64MB RAM and a 1.2 GB HD running 5.1.2. Okay, I'll grant you that it is glue-slow now, but it was not so bad beforeI pulled 192MB of RAM out for other projects. I guess I just never realized these systems were just too slow to run SME 5. I guess they really need to be put out to pasture. Probably can't happen soon enough.

Remember when a P90 was unbelievably sci-fi fast, and we all knew how many clock cycles the CPU wasted between each of our keystrokes?

Remember when 64MB of RAM was incredibly vast and we had to figure out what to do with all the extra? (Hey, how about a 32MB RAM disk? We could use it to hold the Windows temp directory!)

Remeber when a 1GB HD was more than anyone could ever use in two lifetimes?

Now?

A P90 isn't enough to power a PDA.

64MB RAM comes on a paltry video card.

1 GB is barely enough to store a handful of MS Word files.

I guess it is only fitting that a PII/400 with 128MB is not sufficient to run SME 5.

It's quite simple. Nobody is paying us to produce updates for 4.1.2, and nobody else is doing them either.

Our test machines are all spec'ed lower than that and they all run fine. The manager is a little slower than previously, but internationalisation doesn't come free.

Peter, my point is just that it seems a bit unreasonable to expect continued updates from the vendor for a piece of software that's three versions out of date.  And FWIW, my own server isn't spec'ed much higher than what you mentioned (450 MHz, 192 MB), and it runs 5.1.2 just fine.

  As I noted, most manufacturers just seem to forget about upgrades. Yes, its their fault, yes, we should choose other, but here in Spain is no easy to find some kind of solutions, specially when most distributors just have no linux idea and wont let you test the system.

  Its a pitty since there are a lot of custom boards that use a similar CPU. Surelly more RAM will help.

  Coom'on Charlie, I didnt intended you guys to do it, maybe just a hint and at least take into acount some of your user base just hasnt seen enough value to change to SME or they are tied by hardware.

  In our case, we made a lot of effort customizing 4.1.2 into Spanish and developing some addons. Most of this work is public and notorious, other just didnt get 5 stars, other just didnt went public, but we have tried to contribute as much as we can. For us, all SME releases to date just dont add enough value to "forget" all this work and make the job again (translating, changing settings, porting the addons to formagic, ...).

  Also we needed JFS NOW and couldnt wait all the time needed for 5.6 to become stable and make all the changes. Surelly this seems stupid to do once 5.6 is in the stage, but even when it reaches an stable stage we will still need to make a lot of customization. As we were in this situation NOW we have done it and we have released it to the public. We dont care if just one person or a hundred will be in a simillar situation and will use it, we just want to contribute a little help.

  Surelly it wont make for an easy upgrade path, but its just a hackers addon for people like us that are just desperate for such a need. I guess, most of us will switch to 5.6 as this one has features found only in kernel 2.4

  Once 5.6 reaches a stable release we will surelly go for it. Its a pitty we are very low on free time right now with other projects and just cant spend the time we would really like to test it, help finding bugs, translating, and so on.

Samba 2.2.5 support
Apache 1.3.26
mod_ssl 2.8 (with latest patches)
OpenSSL 0.8-5a-29 (patched by RedHat)
OpenSSH 3.4p1 (patched)

I would love to share them with you guys... someone register a website called "esfour.org" and host it.  I would be happy to upload all my 4.1.2 modifications.

4.1.2 with patches is just as modern as 5.5.

As we've said many times in the past, we are happy to host any contributed packages. Please send these packages to contribs@e-smith.com, along with a suitable README file, and they will appear on ftp.e-smith.org.

Thanks for the info.  Maybe we should make a folder on the FTP site called "unsupported_412" or something.  That way everyone's 4.1.2 software can be found in one place.  It's too bad that we have to go through Mitel for uploads.

Guys, I run 4.1.2 with no problems.  I'm as up to date as possible.  4.1.2 is based off RH 6.2, as a result, use RH 6.2 errata's website:
http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/rh62-errata.html

Additionally, I use RPM packages provided by Troels Arvin:
http://rpms.arvin.dk

It's really not Mitel's responsibility to provide updates and errata fixes for outdated distributions, and to be quite honest, Mitel is rather lax in providing timely updated packages to fix security issues (no offense).

If you're going to continue to run 4.1.2, be sure to check RH's errata website in addition to Troel's website or any other producer of RH 6.2 RPMS.  Additionally, if you're not watching a website like http://www.securiteam.com (or an equilivient) then you're not doing a good job as a server administrator.
