A few comments
Find IP use the 'host' cmd - e.g.:
host www.msn.com
www.msn.com. has address 207.68.171.254
www.msn.com. has address 207.68.172.254
www.msn.com. has address 207.68.173.254

And you can use it the other way around:
host 207.68.173.254
254.173.68.207.in-addr.arpa. domain name pointer ca.msn.com.
254.173.68.207.in-addr.arpa. domain name pointer www.msn.com.
254.173.68.207.in-addr.arpa. domain name pointer presario.msn.com.

And:
E-smith defaults to none of the outgoing ports are blocked

I think all the unused lower ports - below 1024 I guess - are blocked. Which means that you can only connect to the std services (smtp, http, ftp and maybe a few others) from the outside. AND you can only connect from the outside to services to services ON your server. To connect to anything on you LAN from the outside, you'll need some kind of forwarding. A std e-smith does not forward any connections.

Hope this helps.
