smtp authentification - sorry have to ask again
« on: September 21, 2002, 12:15:02 PM »
I need my sme box to send email. A direct sending of email from my clients to an external mailbox provider ( eg mymailbox@web.de ) is not acceptable in my case. I am using dun from my e-smith box. Whenever my sme5.5 sends out an email I get the error "pop must be used before smtp" or "smtp needs authentification" Questions :

1) one solution could be that whenever mail is send out, the mail is collected before hand.

2) Another solution I could imagine is that for sending out mail the username and password is given to my mailbox provider beforehand.

I am not expert enough to find a solution. Recommended solution by Michael Maier ( check all 3 min pop ) is not possible for me, and also Damien Curtain solution to setup his securemail packages will not overcome the problem that my sme5.5 authentificates with my provider's smtp - I read from the howto this securemail only authentificates clients with the sme - right ?

Somebody can give me an assistance ? I searched intensively qmail.org and the forums here - could not find an answer.

Why are you using your email providers SMTP server when E-Smith is it's own SMTP server?  Sorry if I'm missing the obvious...

If it is a dial up connection then a lot of email servers will treat it as spam as they cannot do a dns lookup on that mail server. This can occasionally cause problems with mail unable to be delivered.
