adding two parallel PCI cards for a printing server
« on: September 27, 2002, 08:55:47 PM »
hello!
I have a problem with my sme server V5.5: I need to add 2 Parallel ports, each one on a PCI card, but the server doesn't use them.
lpt0: irq 7, 0x378
first PCI card:
lpt1: irq5, 0xa400 [0xa401] and 0xa800 [0xa801]
second PCI card:
lpt2: irq11, 0xac00 [0xac01] and 0xb000 [oxb001]
the cards are the same Timedia Technology 4008A rev1
the parport module is already present, I tried to add the "io=0x378, ...." in /etc/modules.conf, but it still didn't want to see them.
I am certainly not a Linux Guru, so I'm lost!
please help!!!

thanks

P.J.

If this is for printing, I'd suggest an alternative.  Don't burden the SME server with printing.  Server based printing is a terrible resource hog on any server.  Use direct workstation to TCP/IP printing.  This provides many benfits:

- reduces server load
- reduces server admin headaches with printing issues
- printers continue to work if the server is offline for any reason

If your printers do not have a network interface use an external HP JetDirect.  Their 3 parallel port model might be best for you.
