Squid Dies Unexpectedly

Hi all.. I have a server where Squid will occasionally die. It doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason (somedays it dies 2-3 times per week, other times it ill be 25-30 days before it dies) -- the rest of the server seems to run fine. (fyi -- I've tried rebooting the server on several occasions, but still have the same issue)

The server is SME 5.5 running squid-2.4.STABLE3-1.7.2 ... The cache and access logs do not show anything out of the ordinary .. the processes simply die.

If anyone has any suggestions or a script I could run that would automatically reload Squid if it dies, that would be greatly appreciated.

can you confirm how much RAM/disk space free you have?

Sure can ..

the df command shows 48GB available (The server is 2x60GB setup as Software RAID 1)

The system has 256MB ram installed ... top shows 261MB avail, 252MB used, 8.8MB free ... Swap shows 264MB avail, 19.9MB used, 245MB free..

Load averages are generally really low (currently 0.29, 0.09, 0.03 -- I've never seen the system over 1.00 under normal usage), processor is usually 90%+ idle...

Sys specs: Pentium II/266Mhz, 256MB RAM, 2x60GB IDE drives, Matrox video, 2x 10/100 ethernet cards, SCSI CD-ROM .. pretty standard stuff..

Other than squid quiting unexpectedly, the system appears to be functioning perfectly ..
