Enigma Icons on Macintosh

Hi,

I have the weirdest problem using both SME 5.1.2 and 5.5.
On two servers I'm having problems with some Macintosh computers running mac os 9.2.2 and reading Word documents.
Some of the icons change into the standard macintosh document icon with a little BSD enigma inside.
The weird part is that not all the machines on the network have this problem, I tried it on a DV Imac and that machine saw all the documents fine.
When I tried to open the same documents on an ibook they wouldn't open and had that same problem.
I also had this problem on another server with quark documents, alsoweird is that  it's not all the documents on the server that are doing this.

Please help

I have a hunch. Try a different tack in your investigation: might it be
the case that the first machine to access a document doesn't have
problems, but the second machine does? (I suspect ownership problems
with hidden files and directories. The default netatalk icon shows up
when netatalk can't figure out a type/creator to hand to the Mac.)

Cheers,

Cheers For your feedback Rich,

However I logged in using the admin account as well and that wasn't working.
Also even if the Macintosh doesn't reconise the bundle bit (which holds the type/creator on a mac) in a document it should still be able to open it from within Word, but word doesn't reconise it at all.
My gut feeling is that somehow the macintosh doesn't pick up the resource fork from the server, believe me I tried everything you hust told me.

Regards
Patrick

Keep in mind that the admin account is a normal user in every respect,
except when using the admin interface or console.

Me too -- except that I've still got a strong suspicion that it's permissions.

I had a not disimilar problem - i found that changing the permission on the folder and carrying on to lower levens cured it for me

just my 2 cents worth
