bring down the encryption level ..
« on: October 17, 2002, 03:38:29 PM »
hey group

i am using e-smith 5.0 and when i create a PPTP connection it asks me for a 128 bit encryption. as i live in a country where bandwidth is expensive i would like to bring down the level to 40 bit.. how can i do that ?

adios

Encryption "level" does not have anything to do with bandwith !!! 128 bits encryption does not consume more bandwith than 40 bits....

thankx franck.. ok so is there any effect of the level of encryption (40, 128 etc) that u use on speed of data transfered or encrypted ... i am weak at the basics but i guess there has 2 be a link other wise why dont ppl use 128 bit instead of 40 bit .. considering that 128 bit is more secured .. anyways irrespective of this i would like to know how to bring down the level of encryption in 5.0

You can't export 128-bit encryption out of the US, as it falls under munitions laws. I do not know of any technical reason why you'd want to use anything lower than the strongest available...

The processing requirements for 128 bit encryption aren't that much different from that of 40 bit.

The bandwidth requirements are practically the same.

In short, changing encryption isn't going to save you anything.
