Sub-domain on separate Server Not Visible on Web
« on: October 25, 2002, 09:03:15 PM »
Hello,

I am running SME Server lv5.1.2. running as a server & gateway. My primary domain is visible on the internet.

I just created a virtual domain that points to a sub-domain on my network. For example, if my primary domain is AAA.com I created a sub-domain BBB.AAA.com on a separate machine running linux 7.0.2 and apache and a static ip address.

On the SME server, I created a virtual domain BBB.AAA.com and pointed the "local ip" to the right ip address.

Locally within my lan I can type http://BBB.AAA.com on my browser and get pointed to the correct page.

My problem is that I cannot do this from the internet. I thought that I only needed the primary domain to be identified and that all sub domains are handled by the SME server acting as an internal DNS server. Do I actually have to get global IP for this sub domain?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Louis

Dan,

Thanks for the help but I CAN NO LONGER ACCESS SERVER-MANAGER FROM THE WEB! Help!

I download and ran the dmc-mitel-proxypass-0.0.1-2.noarch.rpm per instruction from root.

I got a msg "error: execution of %post scriptlet from dmc-mitel-proxypass-0.0.1-2 failed, exit status 1". I rebooted and went to the web access and saw that there was now an entry called ProxyPass.

I created a proxypass enty, BUT I bypassed the first field which was looking for a local location (the example was "/foo/") and created a URL entry instead. After I clicked on the okay button, it said that the proxypass was created successfully, but a moment later, when I refreshed the screen, I could no longer access the server manager via the web.It gives me an http 500 error.

What did I do wrong?

Thaks for any help, anyone!!!

Louis

Alright, I figured out how to get out of that situation.

I edited the httpd.conf file, commented out the section about the proxy pass. Restarted apache and everything was back to normal.

Now I'll experiment some more with the proxypass. It seems like that's the right place but I was missing something.

Louis,
If you manage to get this working please post a followup with exactly how you did it. I tried this with and without proxypass but was never able to see the internal domains hosted on several e-Smith server-only machines behind an e-Smith server/gateway. I abandoned the effort and recreated all the domains on the server/gateway machine - a solution that is far from ideal. As far as I could tell, proxypass had no effect but the instructions were not completely clear to me so a working example would be great.
Thanks,
jim
