Topic: Installing USB CD-RW drive

Has anyone had any luck doing this?  I've got a USB CD-RW drive hooked up to my server for installing, but after that point it might as well not even exist...  Is there a way that I can install it and maybe even use it to back up smaller bits of data (config files, etc)?
