Disk activity and sleep

I have SME 5.5 installed on a IBM travelstar 2.5" drive. There has been some failures noted on these and IBM does not rate these drives for 24/7 service and suggest that the duty cycle is 18h/24h.

I've tried setting sleep to 5 minutes via hdparm and have also tried using noflushd set at 10 minutes, using the Linu HOWTOs on laptops as a guide. However none of these work, because about every two seconds or so I can hear the hard drive doing a head seek. This constant trashing, completely prevents hard disk spin-down.

I'll would like the hd to be accessed during idle times no more then once per 10 minutes so that I would get about 50% duty during extended idle. I've examined the logs and there is nothing writing to them for as much as an hour at a time (most activity seems to be external attacks via smb or http GETs for WinNT's cmd.exe and an occasional ssh attack).

If I can find out what is kicking the hard drives every 2 seconds and modify its behavior to withhold for 10 minutes, I would be mighty grateful.
