IPSec or PPTP Passthrough
« on: November 29, 2002, 06:35:03 AM »
Hi,

Here's a question I hope someone can answer. I'm using SME 5.5 in Server and Gateway mode. I'm trying to connect a VPN client on the internal network to a VPN server on a remote network. It seems to me that the initial request to open a VPN tunnel is received at the far end, but the reply is never received at the client end. It looks like my SME server if blocking the VPN traffic.

Is there a way I can open the firewall to allow VPN traffic?

Thanks
Dean

In the server-manager under Remote Access, I thing you should allow PPTP.

Hi Mo,

I gave that a try, but it didn't help. I was under the understanding that that was only to allow incoming VPN connections to my Server.

I'm trying to allow VPN traffic out through my server to another server, running an unknown OS. (probably MS-Win2K)

Thanks

Dean,

I use PPTP from a client behind SME 5.1.2 without porblems. No additional setups / changes required from the client end. Have you checked that the problem is not at the remote end  (ie. if you bypass the SME server, can you successfully VPN to the remote location) ?

Do a search in this forum for IPSEC and you will find many posting with commands you can enter to activate the module that allows you to pass your vpn traffic through the firwall.
