question(s) about jabber
« on: December 07, 2002, 02:25:48 PM »
Hi all,

here's another thing I'm curious about. I installed jabber and I can operate it quit nicely behind my hardware firewall for services to the LAN side. Just a few things puzzle me:

1. I would like to use windows messenger (msn messenger that comes with XP)'. Can this be done? If yes, how do I get it to work? I tried adding a communicationsservice in the messenger with no luck. (The basic idea for using jabber is that when MSN is gone because my ISP crashes the connection I want it to work as a kind of failover system for the local LAN).

2. How do I setup these gateways to MSN IRC etc.

3. I used yabber and tried connecting through the jabber server to MSN but got the message that there was 'an error' .... nothing further.

Any ideas, help or solution is more than welcome.

regards,

Jan

Hmm maybe I spoke too soon about jabber actually working but I seem to be able to log in but that is about it :-(  Adding contacts is perhaps not as straight forward as I thought. Ofcourse it's in the manual somewhere and I will take a look but if someone wants to tell I won't stop you ;-))

I had trouble getting a jabber server to work correctly on e-smith--at least using the rpms.  The jabber server would crash often, more often if I was using the MSN transport.  All of the Jabber clients have problems, I think I've tried them all.  Yabber was one of the better ones, I currently use JAJC with really good results.  The best looking client I've seen is Rival (rival.chote.net), but the current version won't let windows shutdown if Rival is running.  It's currently being rebuilt.  However, the chote.net server is the Jabber server I use--it seems to be very stable and the MSN transport works perfect.  I got tired of dealing with my Jabber server crashing and eating up all of the server memory, and their are quite a few good Jabber servers you can use.

Hi Nate,

I've taken a look at the jabber client you mentioned, looks really nice. I was however more interested in using a jabber server on my SME and use MSN messenger to log into that jabber server.

I could not find out weather or not this can be done and if so how? So if you've done this ..... please share ;-)

Hi,

You can't use MSN client together with Jabber. It simply doesn't support it.

Did you use the contributed RPM, for that one works very nicely on my 5.5 box and before on my 5.1.2 box.

You have to make a choice for one of the Jabber clients, that supports MSN, ICQ, YAHOO, AOL transports.

I use Trillian as alternative for MSN and JAJC for corporate Jabber use. I hope that Trillian will support Jabber one day.... The Ultimate day it would be ;-)

Folks,

MSN seem to have changed their protocol late last month as reported on jabber.org maillists. The MSN transport I compiled into the e-smith-jabber-IM rpm no longer works with MSN.
I will try to have a look at the problem at some stage but it is not high on my list of priorities

RequestedDeletion,

I just checked the Trillian site and found they will allow people to construct a .dll themselves to support whatever server they want. So if you or anyone else has the time, expertise and wish to start developing this it'd be great!!!

Unfortunately I lack the first two ............ ;-) If anyone is going to spend their time and resources on this please let us know! I for one would be extremely interested.

Jan

PS I don't know it for sure but I think trilian doesn't need to use a MSN gateway to
work right? So what does a gateway do that is so important?

Trillian is a client program that supports AIM, ICQ, YIM, MSN, IRC, etc. It's like all the different programs rolled into one. You don't need any sort of gateway because the program itself connects directly to the respective network.

Bill,

Thanks! I thougt so but Jabber isn't supported :-(   I just hope someone can add that functionality by writing the .dll plugin. That would certainly make me choose that client, even if the pro version costs some $20 it'd be more than worth it. Unfortunately I lack all expertise nessecary to write a plug-in like that.

For now there's nothing else to do but wait for that good Samaritan open source guru to step in and deliver us from the yoke that is M$  ;-)

happy holidays all! (almost)

Jan,

That is _the_ most wanted feature to Trillian....

Trillian itself  is very good program since it suports 'alomost' any IM protocol. Your question is _our_ question and unfornutately I have the same argument, I lack skills and time.

Anyway, I use Trillian as THE IM client, and hope some poor sole will program a Jabber gateway....

Let's not forget, IM is moving along it's corporate way _and_ IM is getting more an more attention, and IM is a struggle for the big corps. to make deals and get customers. So hy should they care about a 'few' GPL users.. There's more at stake... c.q. to gain in this game....
