Topic: Troubles with Squid-2.4.STABLE1

I was going through the how-to on bandwidth limiting. I download the squid package as in the title and when i was going through the steps in the how-to section. I copied the package to the /var/tmp directory then unpacked it. I then changed to the squid-2.4.stable1 directory. All was good. When i went to run the command ./configure --prefix=/opt/squid --exec-prefix=/opt/squid etc,etc,etc i gave me a messge
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

What does this mean? what can i do to fix it? I am running e-smith 5.5 is this okay to use with this? Do i have to uninstall squid to fix this? If so where is the file and how do i uninstall it? Said in the forum this was going to be easy for a novice? Guess i am not even at that level yet. But i am trying. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help. Krusty

you need the development toolkit so that you can compile things. I cant remember the address for the download. It could have been on the star networks site......

Or likely better yet, find already compiled RPMs. Most things of interest are available off the shelf.

What is in the development toolkit? Where do i put it? What do i do with it? None of this was in the how-to. And they said it would be easy. Do i have to download the gcc-2.96-98.i386.rpm? If so where do i put it and what do i do with it? Sorry for all the questions but i don't think i would even put myself in the class of novice, but i am trying to get my head around it.
