[KNOPPIX Linux]

This is the coolest thing I've ever seen.  It's a live-eval linux version like SuSE makes, but it actually seems to work well.  Good for accessing corrupted Windows and Linux installations...and fixing those Linux...Ooops!

I have try to use Knoppix on my network with 2 SME 5.5 server, it work well, with the DHCP setting and samba.

I guess it is a good solution to most of us, if we need a quick and dirty way to setup a office.

I find the KNOPPIX disk great to demo client side linux in general  and contrast the 'kitchen sink' install approach to the 'less is more' approach used by the e-smith server.  You can leave it with people as a freebie so they can explore stuff like OpenOffice.org and maybe help them off Microsoft Office.  

You can point out that they 'could' do some of the same things as e-smith but they would miss out on the simple, robust server management features and the invaluable forums that are focused on server solutions.

I also found it useful to test if hardware is compatible with the Linux 2.4 kernel.  My PCCHIPS 841 motherboard would not recognize the pci bios due to an apparent kernal bug so neither the onboard or PCI NIC was detected.   Same problem installing RedHat 8.0 with the motherboard.   However,  SME server 5.1.2 recognized the pci bios and the NICs worked fine because it uses a 2.2 kernel.

Both tests required about 10 minutes.  KNOPPIX did not touch the hard drive however.
