Supported Backup Drives
« on: January 08, 2003, 08:57:15 PM »
Hi,

I can't for the life of me find a list of Backup devices supported by E-Smith 5.x - can anyone tell me where to look?

Also... what is the general consenus on back ups... DAT / AIT?!?! I am looking for an inexpensive solution. Problem : The client is a graphic designer and will have a 120GB harddisk on the SME box and I need to figure out a backup solution for them.... because a 12/24 or 20/40GB tape is of no use if they start storing more than the tape can hold?!?!?

Help!!! Any ideas....

Regards,

I have built and use about 5 machines using the 20GB IDE Seagate drive.
it works well for me.

A 120Gb USB HD costs about 250gbp. I don't know how easy/hard it is to mke it work with e-smith...
They are a bit cheaper than tape drives but there would be some problems with keeping backups. Atleast two drives are needed though, one to back up to and the other incase that fails. These could be swapped on a nightly basis.
The USB drive would be cheaper for the short term as long as you don't want to keep backups...

I've been looking at the 20GB IDE Travan from Seagate (mainly due to their price), but after doing a search on this site, there appears to be countless problems with installing them and performing a valid backup.  Do you have any tips/mini how to ?

Hi there,

I been using an HP DAT 24i with success with ver. 5.1.2, 5.5 and 5.6 beta7.
Works ok with the included flexbackup program even better with tapeware.

I have Seagate Travan 20MB tape drives at two sites, and have been using them for about three years.

See http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/howto/idetape-howto.html for some timps on installing the drive.

I've been using flexbackup to do restores & partial restores.  See also http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/howto/flexbackup-howto.html about how to use this.

Restores are slow, but I've done partial restores a number of times and had no problems.

Cheers,

Andrew

Looks like one of the solution to your problem.

I just guess any one is already using it.
