VPN clent can't connect
« on: April 19, 2001, 09:16:10 PM »
I'm trying to connect to the e-smith server using PPTP, the clent runs NT4, I've installed the PPTP, added the VPN device in dial up, restarted, changed the e-smith setting to allow vpn connections and tried to log on.
I'm using the e-smith servers external IP adress but I'm not getting through, I just get 2 beeps and access is denied. I've tried using several different existing username/password combinations. What did I miss?

Gollen:
Have you checked the encryption level of the client (nt 4.0 Service Pack ?)
It should be 128 bit encryption
I'm not sure if NT 4.0 can handle it  (at least up to service pack 4)

Thanks for your reply. It looks like it was a servicepack thing. I'd used servicepack 6 already I think but not after adding dial-up networking. I already had strong encryption so that wasn't it. The last servicepack I used was 6a btw.
I'll be installing the client on other boxes later on so I might be able to pinpoint the problem.

I can connect to my e-smith server by VPN but I haven't been able to create a connection to my frinds e-smith server. He's in a different location. I connect through ADSL, he uses cable. We can get into each others servers using putty. I'm downloading the 4.1.2 version now to see if that helps.

everytime you change any of the networking setting for NT4, especially anything to do with RAS and the VPN stuff you should reapply the service pack you are using.

Also you can download a high encryption version of service pack 6 from the MS website.
