modified qmail for capturing all inbound/outbound email
« on: February 10, 2003, 03:39:46 PM »
There was a thread recently about recompiling qmail so as to capture all inbound and outbound email.  The last poster said he had successfully performed this and gave a very brief summary of what was done.

Having never compiled anything on Linux/SME before I thought I'd have a go and downloaded the qmail source files,  make, gcc etc (from rpmfind) , but each RPM I install seems to then need additional utilities installing, which in turn need additional utilities installing.  I know it is possible to just force the RPM's on the system, but have no idea what the minimum set of utilites are.

Can anyone kindly provide me with a set of instructions for performing the compile operation (what rpms need installing etc) or is it possible to just mail me the modified qmail file(s).

Many Thanks,

Tim Haynes.

Sorry - forgot to say that this is for sme 5.5/5.6 which I believe use the same version of qmail?

Thanks.

Hi Tim,

To build a system to be able to compile / etc, just download the devtools (get the right one for the SME version your are using) packages from myezserver.com.

Then you can download and compile the qmail source.

The crux of all the issues with qmail is the fact that the license does not allow anyone to distribute modifed qmail binaries.

Strictly speaking, this is not 100% accurate. You cannot distribute modified binaries and still call it qmail. You can call it anything else and then distribute it (as mentioned by one of the Mitel guys over at devinfo - because he's been doing it since a few versions of SME back -- which really gets me because if so, then why all the wasted time and discussion about why they CANNOT change that one line of source to enable mail archiving and recompile it, then include it but just call it something else ????).

Hey,

Just wondering if you got qmail modified to handle the "capturing" (logging) of all inbound/outbound emails?  I assume you are doing the QUEUE_EXTRA stuff and recompiling?

Thanks,
Drew
