Externa IP via DHCP

Externa IP via DHCP
« on: April 09, 2003, 01:36:18 PM »
Hi,

have just installed SME server 5.6 för the first time a few days ago.  I want to recieve an external IP from my ISP via DHCP, but it doesn't work. I use cabel modem to connect to internet and when I connect only my stand-alone Windows machine it works fine.

I've chosen "DHCP with ethernet address" in the External interface Configuration since that's what I use in Windows and it works there, but it doesn't recieve a proper IP address. Instead it seems to give itself 192.168.65.17 as external IP address, wich ofcourse is useless.

I've tried to manually retrieve av IP adress via the dhcpcd command, but it fails also.

Any ideas?

Erik.

Are you sure you don't have the internal and external interfaces swapped? Try switching the cables..

Also, some cable modems and/or ISPs track the MAC address of the NIC. The modem/ISP tracks one "valid" MAC. If it works with your Windows NIC, it may be locking out the SME NIC. You can try using the pinhole reset button on the cablem modem, or calling your ISP if they track it, or swapping in the Windows NIC.

The internal and external interfaces are not swapped. I've tested pulling the external cable out and then send ping packets from server to any client in the LAN - it worked.

The ISP don't care about MAC-address either. If I plug in the SME Server network card in my windows machine it works. It also works with my laptop using a PCMCIA network adapter connected directly to the cable modem.

I've made some progress. The server suddenly got itself a proper IP adress, but still there's no connection to the internet. Eaven stranger is that if I pull the external cable out and reboot the server it still recieves the same IP address. When the server starts it makes a long stop when "starting network" is displayed on the screen. After a while a green OK appears and the OS load goes on.

Did you apply 5.6 update 2?  Think it solves some issues with dhcp on the external interface.

Yepp, no difference.
