5.6 U4 Memory @ 97% of 512mb
« on: May 06, 2003, 04:01:11 AM »
I have read some of the other posts about the memory usage and how "it's a good thing" but I have to say as the SME server is getting from 22% usage to 90% we experience no problems, but from 92 - 98% we have mail that does not get delievered, very sluggish performance of the gui.  We have mail stuck in the queue, sysmon graphs that don't complete being created and have had a problem remotely rebooting the server from the server-manager (had to do it commandline).   We are using a P3 700 with 512 ram and 60 gig hard drive, a T1 line with 12 mail accounts and 14 users for web surfing also a win2k machine is the domain controller and the wins server , dhcp , dns server so the load is not on the SME . The SME is in server-gateway mode and hosts a  very low usage static home page but it does run spamassasin and mailfront rbl lists,is this too much for this machine? The server takes about 3/4 of a day to get  back to 97%.  When it gets to 97% not all mail is bogged down some goes right thru but others are not delievered until the SME is rebooted.  Can anyone shed some light on this for me.  I do not recall every having this problem with 5.5 or 5.12

Run "top" at the command line, and use "M" (case-sensitive) to sort by memory usage.

Are you using "spamassassin" or spamd/spamc? I'm showing spamd using 14.1% on our 5.5U6. We only have a 233MHz Cyrix MII-PR300, 128MB, 4GB for about 20 users (usually 10 on constantly).

Have you specified to the SME that the Win2k server is handling WINS (HowTo on my contribs.org space) and DNS, and disabled DHCP (Services contrib panel)?

I agree that those numbers seem really high. 5.6 is more demanding, but that seems to be quite a bit more server than we have, but quite a bit slower...

Are the addresses supposed to have a space?

redacted @earthlink.net
redacted @redacted .com
mail.redacted .com

Typically windows machines truncate every thing
after the space in addresses.

Perhaps your high overhead is caused by your server
trying to resolve incomplete addresses?

At any rate, check your log files for a consistent pattern ;-)

Here is the top with an M sort.   I just don't get why this is filling up.  btw this is 97% of memory and it only takes a little more than 1 day to get here.

Any other Ideas?
