No login on main console - No Domain Login
« on: May 29, 2003, 02:54:01 PM »
Hi All

Has anyone go any inforamtion on this problem, had a client ring this morning users unable to login to domain server. This server is running as server only, SME 5.6, DHCP server. When I arrived there on the monitor connected to the SME I could not even get a login , could only ping the server. Power off and on and all is fine again. Another strange thing, the server is using Tapeware to do the back up each night at 10:00PM, last night (28th May) no back up and on the tapeware "Calendar" it was shaded "grey" which mean skip this day (same as Saturday and Sunday ) BUT the the back up started at 12:01 am on 29th and worked fine.

This has happened before :- http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=17379.msg67658#msg67658

If no one has an answer then I will have to re-install a lower version say 5.5

Thanks in advance for any advise

Hi RequestedDeletion,

Firstly thank you for replying to my post.

In my case I cannot see it being "resource starvation" as the server had only 3 users connected and then only using the intranet (this is just a test period) and it is a PentPro 200  256 MB Ram 36Gig SCSI HD.

What do they mean by "lack of file handles"?

Also I cannot see anyting in the log.

I will await your reply, but I think I will be doing a new installation and it will not be 5.6 ( I have a 5.1.2 running in one of my sons business and it has never given me an ounce of trouble )

John,

considering the 'unknown' issue with 5.6(U4) I think going for version 5.5.U6 is the best option for now. An upgrade is easily done if 5.6 get's stable.

The bad thing is that Mitel want's to help but needs our feedback and reports before they can 'planning' fixing things. But my logs are empty and I can not reproduce the 'frozen' state. It occurs randomly.

Regards,
RequestedDeletion

ps. Concerning 5.1.2, please read the advisories that Mitel issued about _all_ versions prior to 5.5 Update 6.

Ray,

Thank you for your interest, however I  did a fresh install of 5.5 u6 this morning.

I have now just finished setting up all the ibays, groups, users and the Intranet.

This machine I am using has been used for SCO Unix in another life, I have replaced the HD, and changed the  RAM. The original RAM was removed and all new RAM was installed. I hope this one works.

I have a problem mounting the cdrom ( I have just posted a thread re this).

What happened to you is exactly what happened to me.

Redhat has released updates kernels which contains:

"A fix written by Andrew Morton is included to address a system stall caused
by file I/O in rare cases."

Maybe it's related?

Is this related or not ? I sometimes have a problem quite similar on a 5.5 U6 :
One cannot access to ssh login, smb shares, etc.. via the network, but you can login on the console locally. The only solution is to reboot the server.

RequestedDeletion,

Thank you very much for reply, as I said in one of my other replies I installed 5.5 U6 onto the machine giving me the trouble, as I had to get it back to my client. It has been running now for a week and no problems.

I will not have a look at the Red Hat item , as I have another PC here that I could install 5.6 on and have a play with it.

philippe,

My was nearly the same as yours, but I could not even login on the main console.

I could only re-boot using power off power on
