Along with the majority of UK ADSL providers, Nildram is actually reselling the BT service and this uses PPPoA with username and password authentication.

I've searched the forums and haven't been able to find any discussions of a way to set this up using an ADSL Modem and SME. There are a couple of messages, but the static IP approach, which seemed to be the only thing actually discussed, doesn't work.

Has anyone got a method worked out for attaching a BT based PPPoA ADSL provider directly to SME - in other words with the modem bridged and authentication etc sent from the Server?

When I mentioned how easy this was to do with a router a while back, Charlie Brady sent me a peeved message asking why I'd suggested that it was easier than using a modem and setting SME up to authenticate - it now turns out that it may not actually be possible to use a modem for lots of UK providers. Or have I misconstrued the situation?

Hi Ed,

Did you ever get a resolution to this?

I'm having a similar problem at the mo, I want the sme server to send the pppoa username/password through my Netgear DM602 Modem as I don't want to use it (the modem) in router mode, for obvious reasons.

Cheers.

I haven't been able to sort it out yet. I'd actually given up until I get my own Nildram broadband account in late January because I don't actually have any clients running SME now.
