Convert from Novell print servers
« on: May 16, 2001, 07:12:56 PM »
Hi guys,

I would like to convert all existing printers running Novell NetWare 3.12 print server to e-smith server. There are different types of printers: Epson dot matrix, Epson stylus photo, HP4L, 6L and Canon inkjet and BJC types. These printers are connected to a 386PC (one-printer-one-PC basis) running remote print console under NW3.12. I would like to use e-smith server as printer server and connect these printer remotely. Would anyone brief me the way to configure in V4.1.2? Neither there is hostname or IP address for these printers, nor network card/print server hardware being used.

Best regards,
Mark

Just an opinion, but the print services in 3.12 are PC intensive, but fully functional. But to approach that level of printing control without using print servers is difficult if not impossible. There is no method I am aware of to duplicate that approach.
Print servers are your best best, cheap and reliable. Intel Netports are perfect for this sort of thing, very standard, and well understood. I also have a preference for the "pocket" print servers from extended systems.

They speak TCP/IP, and plug directly on to the printer's parallel port. Hook up power and data, and you are ready to print. Once they print out their start up page, you will have all the info you need to enter it in to the e-smith.
