Does the 2.8 version of Samba in SME 6 support Chinese language?

I am planning to roll out and setup possibly up to 6 servers (VPN'd) over 3 cities (Beijing, Shanghai and Zhengzhou) but am reticent to purchase until the Chinese language probs that are plaguing ver 5.6 can be remedied by an officially packaged Mitel samba package (not done my me as a hack).

I have had to go to great length with client profile restrictions to ensure that no Chinese files get included in any profile, favourites, my docs, desktop, ie quick links, etc.  A plausible work around for bilingual staff - but not good enough for staff that need to use Chinese language client OS's and file names.

Cheers,
Richard.  The same one from long time ago at Cubok.

There is no SME 6 - there is only SME 6.0 beta 1.

If you develop and test Chinese language support,  please be sure to send your patches to Mitel.

Thanks

Dear Richard,

I have work on this problem for almost 1 year, and I am selling a solution based on SME 5.5 that support Chinese, may be we can talk. (I am in Hong Kong)

It is quit a trouble job to tune the template system to fully support Chinese, I have spend over 3 months work to make sure that the system support Win98, Win2000, WinXP for all the chinese file name and login......

The Samba will just hang if someone just put a Chinese file in his Dir...... and that is quit a problem.....

I have not try the 6b version, but I have get it done on a 5.5 machine.  and it is now working fine to support Chiense a all way. and support  around 2,000,000 hit per day as a web server. with Xoops installed.  (www.Baby-Kingdom.com).

Best Regards,

G'Day,

I know of them.  Our Beijing LUG has some correspondance and technology exchanges with them.  But their products are really quite, well - not polished.  I would rather not use them.

A while back at a lunch with a top honcho for Red Hat who was visiting Beijing, the person in question mentioned how Red Flag is actually hurting Linux's image here because of their product quality.  Which like many chinese IT endeavours are poorly setup, ignore standards and in some cases cause direct probems for others.  So I am also not keen on their products.

Nin Hao Paul.

Yihou wo gei ni fa email.

I do not want to use it for logins, just filename support.  Samba croaks (dies) on any file with hanzi in the filename.  So if someone even looks at a file (but does not have it in their profile) it will cause the system to come undone because windows keeps a "recent used" list.

Office also keeps such a list.

So I had to disable many features, turn on failsafe logins (if a prob - do not allow login) and many other settings.  Which ultimately are all well and good in their own right.

However if one user saves one file with hanzi...... or right clicks in windows to create a new file/folder/etc while using Chinese windows - it will also croak as the default name is not "New Folder" but is hanzi.

The market here for SME is just bristling.  Companies like mcsb.com are ripe to have their market share eroded.  And the current pricing for Mitel is cheaper than they are for their more fragmented system or just support with no vertical integration of product, support and add ons.

I am actually keen to do full Chinese localisation for SME, the server manager, install and samba.  I was told that a newly released samba fixed the Chinese issue?  Hence my question on SME 6b1.

I would like to investigate samba more - but the archive server is censored so I need to jump through a few hoops to access many sites as I am sure the whole world knows why.  Again why I asked here - hoping for an answer without having to start jumping.

What thought have you given to full localisation of SME?

I have many friends and gifted coders and Linux mates here from China telecom and work.  I also know people in our LUG (http://www.beijinglug.org/) who are serious Linux developers for Nokia, Motorola and other tech companies and most of us are bilingual to differing degrees.

Cheers,
Richard.
