MAC Addresses and Usernames

Good morning,

I was wondering if there was something kind of like this in sme already. If you get broadband from cableone.net, depending on which plan, you can only connect computers with the original mac address that you signed up with. Somehow they create a LDAP database of some sort when you sign up. After powering up everything for the first time and you try to surf, you are directed to their signup page on their proxy server. It asks you for your username and password. Evidently this proxy server maps the mac address that you have to your username. If you change your nic later, you can't get on unless tech support resets your account.

This might be an option to my age old question of using mac addresses as userid's get an ip address from a dhcp server. I could possibly build a ldap database but would and/or could sme dhcp query it to verify/authorize an ip address for the workstation requesting one?

A penny for your thoughts,

Wally
