Boot problem after installing v5.5 update 6
« on: July 04, 2003, 10:22:57 AM »
Hi guys,

I have just installed all the RPM's for e-smith v5.5 update 6 and when I rebooted, my pc will not boot up.

It gets as far as half way through loading LILO (it shows LI on screen) and freezes.

I beleive this has occurred before.

Can anyone suggest a solution.

I have tried re-installation from the CD, but this gets to detecting previous installations and crashes.

I am running 2 SCSI disks in a software mirroring arrangement.

I see nothing in 5.5u6 that would cause this. I suspect that you may be having harddrive problems since the reboot. Do you have a boot floppy? You'll want to use it if so.

If you can boot off of a floppy, you can try rerunning lilo to rebuild the bootloader, and try inspecting your data.

I have the same problem with ver. 5.6 , but I was using more than one HDD (one SCSI + IDE) Same problems were reported from other users ... Try booting with system disk only. Plese reply if I am of some help !?

I found the problem.

the update overwrites the e-smith post-install scripts.

These update lilo and the passwords file when you run it, so it overwrote my mirrored scsi disk info with ide drive info and deleted all my passwords.

I got around it by restoring my old lilo.conf file to /etc and re-running lilo and re-setting all my passwords through server-manager before re-booting.

I am still a bit unsure of where to go from here, but my system is now back up and running

Nice :) My second HDD is used for ibays and home only. So before I made any upgrade I simply correct fstab > disconect second HDD and do an Upgrade. Everything works fine (more than one SME) After successful upgrade connect second HDD and correct fstab ;)

No, it doesn't. Update 6 only updates the PPTP server, and corrects a problem with DHCP client options. None of the post-install scripts are changed.

Here's the changelog entry for the e-smith-base RPM:

* Wed Apr 23 2003 Gordon Rowell

- [4.10.16-02]
- Backport of 4.13.15-27 [gordonr 8471]
  - console: Only set 'd' option for DHCP - Send Ethernet address [gordonr 8344]
  - Delete dhcpcd cache files when reconfiguring dhcpcd [gordonr 8336]
  - Force reconfiguration of dhcpcd on upgrade [gordonr 8336]
- Add Requires: on later initscripts version [gordon 8471]

Nothing should ever delete all your passwords, or change your lilo configuration from scsi to ide. Please send a full report of your investigations to smebugs@mitel.com so we can try to work out what happened.
