Topic: pc connected via VPN can't ping other PCs

I am suffering a weird e-smith vpn problem (using SME 5.6 with and without last updates):

I am connecting to my SME box via a PPTP/VPN using a Windows2000
client. However once I am connected I cannot ping to the other computers
in the remote LAN, why does it happen? It seems that I only can see the SME server.

When I issue a ipconfig command in my windows box I can see that
my IP config (for the VPN connection) is as follows

IP: 172.19.39.81
Gateway: 172.19.39.81
Subnet: 255.255.255.255

I wonder if the subnet mask is the problem... any ideas to fix it?

It seems that it was finally a problem with my client, that a full reinstall+update  and a carefully configuration on my winxp client fixed.
