Sending ETRN command to collect email
« on: October 21, 2003, 05:06:24 AM »
We have a problem with our ISP changing their settings and they have informed us that in order to collect email from them (that is stored on their servers when we are not online) then we need to send an ETRN command when we connect in order to receive email straight away.  Especially after weekends the delay currently can be 3 or 4 hours after connecting before we get our email.

We have E-smith set for Standard Email Retrieval Mode.  I know we can set this setting to ETRN, however this is not really what we want as once we are online at the start of the day we usually stay online for the whole day without disconnecting.

Is there a way of sending a single ETRN command when we connect to our ISP.

For those thinking that we should just ask our ISP to change their settings back to what they were, we have tried that.  A change in ownership of our ISP has made them impossible to deal with and we will be leaving them as soon as our current contract expires.

Yes, configure the system to use ETRN.

If I configure Email Retrieval to ETRN and set it to retrieve every five minutes from the secondary server does this mean that whilst we are connected we will receive our email direct as before and that an ETRN command will still be sent to our secondary server every 5 minutes?

If this is the case it would seem to be a waste in having to send an ETRN command every 5 minutes when there would be no mail waiting after the first ETRN command is sent (as we are online with our own server running).  Hence the question as to whether we can send a single ETRN command when we are first connected.

We could change the setting to 15 minutes but I would prefer not to go longer as we usually have one person who starts earlier than the rest and it used to work well that when we first connected we would receive all our overnight emails before most people arrived as there isn't a lot of demand for bandwidth when only one person is in the office.
