Slow server issue
« on: June 12, 2001, 06:40:46 PM »
Hello,  I have been happily using E-smith 4.1.2 for over a month now.
yesterday the server appeared to be DOG SLOW as if I was on a shared
56k connection!  I am using static IPs on DSL though.

The problem is I only host one simple web site (my own) with no more than
5 small JPGs pictures and yesterday the web page viewing was slow and even seemed to stop transfer for 5-10 seconds at a time.  It was fast anyday of the week in the past.

Now having the server at home I was able to do a 'top' and monitor
CPU and process activity.  CPU use was < 10% and almost no process
load at all!

So, my question is, what in the world could cause my web page serving
slow down to a trickle?  I know my DSL connection is good and not the
issue (having done some tests).  Something has caused the Esmith server to slow down like I've never seen it before (CPU use is still < 10% though).

Anyone with similar experiences or clues? My only thoughts are maybe:
1) A hacker is flooding my static IP but it the LED activity does not support
this observation
2) Esmith server doing maintenance? But not for the 2+ hours I observed this problem!  Even so, it shouldn't kill my server speed.

You might try switching out the NIC, I have run into several problems in the past due to bad network cards sending multiple packets that are corrupt which will slow down performance.
