neighbor table overflow and Nut ups?
« on: November 07, 2003, 06:51:28 AM »
I recently lost a power supply on a 5.6u5 server. The server has a Belkin UPS using Nut and a USB connection. This (ASUS-AMD-based) motherboard has both USB1.1 and USB2.0 ports. Apparently when I reassembled the server I moved the USB cable from a 2.0 to a 1.1 port or vice-versa.

The messages log is now filling up with the ever-popular "data stale" ups messages which I have seen many times after enabling Nut. These messages usually go away when I move the USB connection around - from port to port until I get one that Nut "likes". I have several of these Nut/Belkin UPS setups on 5.6 servers and I usually just enable Nut, plug in the USB cable and it works (can't get Nut to work on 6.0b3 yet but I will keep trying.)

More troubling are the "kernel: Neighbour table overflow" messages now also filling up the log along with occasional "No buffer space available" messages. Here are a couple of excerpts from the messages log:

Nov  6 11:02:03 hlgateway dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.34.73 from 00:07:e9:3d:67:b6 via eth0
Nov  6 11:02:03 hlgateway dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.34.73 to 00:07:e9:3d:67:b6 via eth0
Nov  6 11:02:03 hlgateway dhcpd: send_packet: No buffer space available
---

Nov  6 11:07:45 hlgateway kernel: NET: 319 messages suppressed.
Nov  6 11:07:45 hlgateway kernel: Neighbour table overflow.
Nov  6 11:08:34 hlgateway last message repeated 13 times
Nov  6 11:08:39 hlgateway upsmon[1188]: Poll UPS [localhost] failed - Data stale
Nov  6 11:08:39 hlgateway upsmon[1188]: UPS localhost is unavailable
Nov  6 11:08:44 hlgateway upsmon[1188]: Poll UPS [localhost] failed - Data stale
Nov  6 11:09:19 hlgateway last message repeated 7 times

My questions for you gurus are:
1.) Could the Nut UPS problem be causing either or both of the other messages - the "Neighbor table overflow" and the "No buffer space available".
2.) If not the UPS, what may be the cause of these problems?
3.) What is a Neighbour Table Overflow anyway? Googling and searching here did not turn up any useful info (for me at least). There are numerous posts on the Internet from people who have gotten the message but I could not find a single explanation of the problem that made sense to me?
4.) Has anyone determined that Nut ups will work better off of usb 2.0 vs 1.1? (Note that I have not gotten it to work at all on 6.0b3, but that may be the motherboards I am using)

Since I cannot visit this server just now I have accessed it remotely and turned off the Nut service (and done a post-upgrade + reboot). I am hoping that this will fix the other problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I would like to get Nut going again.

Sorry for the long post.
Thanks,
jim
