Access Linux Prompt from Windows
« on: June 20, 2001, 02:28:58 PM »
Is there any way I can access the Linux prompt from a Windows ME Workstation, using something like pcAnywhere or AT&T's VNC ?  I currently have a KVM switch, which is great as the e-smith server & windows box are physically close, but I want to move the e-smith server.
I know I can access the e-smith manger through a web browser, but I want to be able to access the root prompt.  Any suggestions ?

e-smith has mindterm built in doesn't it?

I use PuTTY and winscp, both work superbly.  Logging in (multiple
instances) from Putty allows you to run Midnight Commander so that a
dumb Linux newbie like me can find and edit files more easily.  You
need to enable ssh access to e-smith (If it isn't enabled by
default - I can't rememner)

Hope this helps

e-smith has OpenSSH built in. I have however managed to achieve my objective. I initially changed the settings in e-smith, and then chose the client software you suggested (PuTTY and Winscp), but could not establish a connection. I don't know why ??

I then used a How-To contributed by Darrell May, which uses an ibay to develop a webconsole & connection using Mindterm. I made a slight modification to his How-To, so that I am using the latest version of Mindterm. Hey Presto, no more KVM and this allows me access from my own network, as well access when I am not at home.

My next task is to find an easy way to find and copy files. I am now reading about Midnight Commander you suggested. Being a newbie myself, I ccould sure do with an explorer type GUI to navigate around the e-smith box.
