PBX or VOIP for small business

One of the things being hyped today is VOIP.  I have a very limited knowlege of this technology.  From a cursor search of the internet it seems that a DSL, T1, Frame Relay or ISDN full time connection with a linux box with appropriate hardware can  provide PBX capability.

Asterisk http://www.asteriskpbx.com/main/main.html appears to have the necessary software using ADtran or other hardware. Also Franklin http://www.ilocus.com/news651.htm  has a T1 line card.

This appears to be another way for linux to serve small business well.

Is this one of the areas e-smith might tackle?

Maybe one day, but it's not on the near term radar. My personal opinion is that your choice of "hyped" was appropriate - but I stand to be proven wrong :-)
