Topic: Suggestions on parts for e-smith

In the user manual there was a particular network card that was suggest, what would be very helpful for me at least is a list of suggested parts for a e-smith server in the case of someone who is looking at building a system around e-smith.

Things like what model motherboard, CPU, SCSI controller, HDD and the like I should get for each of the category servers.

The current server I'm planning on building is for a network of up to 40 PC to act as a file server, with heavy usage.

The server I am thinking of at the moment is:
1 GHz T-bird
256 MB PC133 ECC RAM
2*45Gb IBM ATA100 Drives (For RAID)
And little idea about the rest. Any comments? Like what MB should I use for this.

I would use standard solid parts such as Asus, Biostar, Gigabyte motherboards, 3com Nics S3 video etc.   I have found with linux, as long as you stay with standard generic parts you won't have any problems.

Amen...  and since it is based on RedHat based you can use thier compatibility list.

You might want ti think about a SCSI card and a tape drive.  I like it better than IDE.

Go for the Asus MB umm A7Va I think.. It has IDE raid built onto the board (for cheapness).
Or fork out for a good scsi setup.
Apart from that.. looks like a nice setup...

i'm posting this from a new box i got at pogolinux.com that i'm REALLY happy with. it resembles your description, except it has only one 60G drive. asus mb, 256m ram, 60g ata100 (in a removable bay for easy swap), nice case - easy acces and  plenty of ventilation.

it's sweet - nice components - and a buddy of mine BUILT a similar system for more than it cost me to buy it from them. go check out their $999 special - i think it's called the althura or something similar - you won't regret it. upgrade it a little bit, and they'll ship it to ya already built.

if nothing else, it's a good place to get a starter list of components.

Hi.
How did you manage to get the ATA100 harddrive working? When I try to install E-Smith on mine (two IBM ATA/100, 20 GB, Asus A7V with Promise ATA100 Controller), I get Kernel Panic after installation fails to see the disks.
How did you do it?
