vpn client stuck "opening port"

Hello all, here's my problem:

In the e-smith manager, I set the pptp to allow 3 clients.

On my dialup (win2k pro) machine I set up a vpn connection to the server using it's
external ip.

The client connection shows the following messages:
               verifying username and password...
registering your computer on the network...
               opening port...    then stays there.
Any ideas why it might be hanging in the "opening port" phase?

I'm pretty unix-literate, but don't have much exposure to vpn at a low level...

Thanks a ton for any help you can provide...

How is your win2k machine getting to the Internet?
Some firewalls don't let PPTP through properly.
