should there not be some kind of back-up system
where users can back up their user dir
or the admin can select what to back up like
- system files
- config files
- user1 home + mail
- user2 home + mail
- ibay1 home

etc...

Check out page 69 of the manual. There is already a built in system for backing up all of your system configuration, user files, i-bays, etc. You can't pick and choose, but it gets the job done.

ahh i don't have the manual.

you see, some of my users have lots of music in their home dir like 15gig
and to back that up is just dumb for me because none of the computers on the network have that big of a hard-drive

so yeh basically i need something where i can select what i want to backup

That's a poor excuse considering that the manual is available in online format right from the e-smith manager screen.

Why don't you have an internal IT policy about music? Write a scipt and grep any file with .mp3 or .wma extension and delete them!

If none of the hard drives on the network are 15 GB, then how do some users have 15 GB of music? Never mind. I don't want to know... But you're right, it is dumb to waste backup window time, tape head life and media for backing up music (unless of course you're a music studio)

And finally, you can select which -directories- are backed up by editing the /etc/e-smith/web/functions/backup file.
