There is NO need for X on a server. One of the best things about SMS is that it DOESN'T have X. The X environment introduces a whole heap of configuration, stability, support and security issues that you just don't need. SME is basically set and forget. The things that are designed to be changed can be handled by the web/lynx interface. If you want to do things beyond this then you really should know what you are doing. Having X on the machine won't make you all knowledgeable. The benefits of NOT having X substantially outweigh X's convenience/ease of use. Moreover, I'd probably stop using SME if it had X. Might as well just run full blown Redhat.

I think Duncan puts it well. I have been messing around for 5 yrs trying to get a server that does what I want, with the input required from me matched to the time I have to spend on it.

I remember novel
I have tried Nt3.?
I have used NT4
I have a Win 2k box running now.

They are all far too complex for a single man business who needs a server. (And WHY, you may ask, does he need it ? Well enough in my company's case to have 3 SME servers running on test right now...BUT ..still on test. I have problems with back up. I have problems with strange refusals with one box to accept large files. I have a problem with making email work ok. BUT given the time I have to spend on these issues, I am convinced that this little time is better spent on SME than any other I have tried. (My mandrake raid 5 server has been wonderfull..so much so that now it has broken, I am struggling to recover....Forgot how I built it, it was so reliable ;-(   )

SO
I think that the SME server is one of the best bits of software I have encountered in the last 32 years.

Its best virtue is that it is simple to install; so you get back what you had originally after a (test) hard drive crash. ANYTHING which is a user patch to the vanilla install is counter productive in these circumstances. Any mention of ".rpm" is an instant turn-off. If you want to fiddle and be a linux guru....get SUSU or red hat and roll your own. ME.....Ill take what you offer with gratitude and build my systems around whatever limitations there are.

Thankyou e-smith/Mitel, and all contributers. From the heart.

Anything you do to improve this hideously expensive product (expensive = 0$) will be very well received by ME.

How does a guy get to help out? Im good at electronics. And very good at technical writing.

What i dont understand is doesnt sme already have a gui? and doesnt the server already have access via vnc(putty) the need for people being scared about linux. i am a linux newbie and i will be for a long time.. im a windows user and find admin of the server is simple.. if a company highers someone to admin a server then id think that admin would need to know how to do that. if they fail to do that then i think they need to rethink thier idea of what a server admin is..

x is not needed.. what would x be needed for? everything can be administered via the gui.. remember this isnt windows.. the need for other apps built with windows programing bloat? no thank you..
