I have set up an e-smith server for our work-group to use as a file-server. Several users are to share an account, but how do I log in from win98 when the account user name is e.g. "fls" and the user is logged into his/her win98 as XXX? The system doesn't ask for a user-name, only a password. I know this isn't an e-smith problem directly, but I figured others may have had similar problems.

Hi Allan,

first of all : this is the wish list - you should post any questions to the proper forum(s).

To answer your question :
Win9x is not capable of really dealing with users. The user you logged in with is the one and only context you are able to work with.
Thats why you only get asked for a pw.

Give everybody his / her own account or change to win2k/xp - or even NT4 - on your workstations.

You can just logout of the Win98 box and log back in as the username you need.  You will need to make sure you have "Client of Microsoft Networks" installed in your network control panel to get the logoff option on the start menu.

You can setup Win98 to use profiles, if you do,  the different logins can have different desktops and favorites and such.

If need to change passwords for existing usernames on 98 you can use the control panel, or just delete the pwl file and login with the info you want to use.

Well - also under NT is doesn't work to access an ibay for user2 when your are logged in as user1. But I can do it when accessing a novell server. Not sure if this belongs into this wish list or the samba wish list ?

well the question doesnt belong here, so my answer doesnt either....

But u can access sources for user2 while logged on as user1 :

net use * \servername\share /dom:user2

It will prompt for the password and u will have to enter it.

Of course if u are already logged onto the server ie. u have mapped a drive as a different user, then u will not be able to log on as a different user.......
