ntop network quota usage tool (or equivalent)
« on: December 04, 2002, 04:53:14 AM »
Hi,

I was thinking the other day that I would love to have ntop or something similar installed on my e-smith gateway so that I can know who of the people on my internal network have download the most.  ie for accounting purposes so that the download charges can be allocated to a particular individual.

Could something like this be configured?  Or is there already a convenient tool which already does this? (I couldn't find one).

Thanks.

Yes, I believe it does, but how can I get ntop to run on my e-smith server?  I can't install the RPM, can't compile it.  oh what to do?  :-)

I think ntop would be a great tool to bundle with e-smith!  It would suit well the corporate users who use it as a gateway.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention:

although the IP traffic matrix does show what computers have been talking to other computers, and how much traffic was sent, it only does it for the local subnet.  I want to know how much traffic was sent between the external internet (my e-smith server is a dialup gateway for several pc's in my subnet) and the individual pc's.  ie, how much traffic was sent between pc1 in my subnet and anything on the external internet connection within the last week....for example.

The matrix in IP Traffic doesn't really show me that...although I would suppose that it would show me how much traffic was sent between the pc and the e-smith gateway.  But this isn't really useful since the e-smith gateway is used for other things too, including file serving on the local intranet.

I only want to know how to do it for internet usage accounting.

Have you tried http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/contrib/ntop/ ?

Hmm, no I hadn't tried that one.  I didn't know it was available as a module.  should have checked.  I've downloaded it now and am downloading other stuff to try and meet the requirements of the package (ie libssl.so.2 etc).  I'll see how it goes after that.

Hi,

Okay, I've installed ntop into my e-smith server.  I will now monitor it over the next few days to see if it reports the kind of statistics I am interested in.  I will let you know how I go.

Thank you all for your help so far.

Hi all,

Okay, I've had some initial investigations into ntop.  I have come to the conlclusion that it does not give me the type of statistics I am after.  Like I said in my first post.  I want to know how much data each PC in my internal networkhas downloaded off the internet through the e-smith gateway.  The closest I get is under the IP Traffic tab of NTOP in the "R->L" collumn.  This tells me how much traffic has entered the local network from the internet, but no information about which pc/user did this downloading.

Can anyone help me out here?  Thank in advance.

Hmmm I dunno, SARG shows all data that goes through the proxy, if you use it. Other than that I would love something that just shows how much data from/to internal LAN went from/to Internet.
