Topic: vpn and win98se on sme 6.0

I am tring to connected to sme 6.0 from windows 98. I can connect to the server from my windows xp computer. I have installed all the updates for win 98 including the 1.4 dialer update. But I keep getting 629 errors.

Have any of you connected a win 98 to 6.0 by vpn
If so can you tell me what you did and what your settings are.

From memory, you need the dun128 update.
Uninstall dun and reboot, reinstall from the win98 disk then upgrade. The upgrade comes with an "ini" file that you right click on and select install.
Search google for dun128 and it will work a treat.
You have to display the propertys of "Pppmac.vxd" in windows/system directory, and make sure the version number is 4.10.200. It also has the following disclamer "PPPMAC (US/Canada Only, Not for Export)"
If the version number is not right, you can just replace the files manually.

Tell me if this is not strange. I added the dun128 stuff. I still can’t connect to the vpn server from win 98. Now here is the strange part. I tried to connected from my xp computer (had been working) and I get error 619. Now I can't get my xp to connect any more.

Could I have broke vpn by tiring to log in with windows 98. Have any of you run into the same thing. I made no changes to my xp computer that was working this morning.

Error Code 619 =A connection to remote could not be established so the port used for this connection was closed.

Double check you have pptp enabled in server manager and set number of clients to whatever you need. (I know you had it working, but check anyway and maybe increase connections)

Are you using the internel ip of SME as the server address for the connection?
Can you ping it?
Have you looked in the logs? Messages log will tell you.
Have you installed and mods?

I have pptp clients set to 15 I upped it from 6. I can contact the server as I can SSH into it. I am using the external ip.  
What log file do i look in?
What mods are their for 6.0 VPN.

You may be able to see some error messages then search the forums and google.

How is your SME setup?
Are you using a modem/router?
Does it allow vpn passthrough?
Does your external nic have an external address?
I presume you are connnecting from the internet.

If you could give us a more detailed description of the enviroment, that would be great.

This is really starting to baffle me. Here is my setup.

Remote location.(where I am trying to connect from)(my office)
I have a smoothwall 2.0 firewall and two SME servers. One in a DMZ for email and web pages. The other is just a file server. I have two client computers I use for testing. One is windows XP pro with all the updates. The other is win 98 with all the updates and is for testing win98 VPN’s. I have a cable internet connection. I use my xp computer to connect to 3 SME 5.6 servers and two windows servers one 2000 server and the other SBS 2000.
I can VPN to any of these servers from my xp computer with no problem. All of the servers are not local to my network. They are all in remote locations connected via the web.

Now I have one site that I set up SME 6.0 to se how well it worked. They have a DSL connection with a static ip. The internet connection is plugged into the sme server directly. I can ping the server just fine and can even ssh into the server. I am the only person making any changes to the server. I do all this off site from my office.

Here is my strange problem. From my office windows XP computer I can connect to the server most of the time. But every now and then it tells me the port is closed and will deny my connection. It seems to deny me when I try to connect from my windows 98 computer and it fails. It will then prevent my XP computer from connection after that. Restarting the 6.0 server doesn’t seem to fix it. But if a hold off for a day it will start to let me connect again. I do not use the same vpn account on both my computers. I make sour my xp vpn is not connected when I try to connect my 98 computer as the would both have the same ip and that may confuse the 6.0 computer.

I also try to connect to the 6.0 server from a win 98 lap top with dial up to be sour it is not my network. I get a 629 error on both 98 computers.  

Win 98 computers
They are both win 98 SE
They both have all the updates
+the 1.4 dialer update and the don128 update

The vpn dialer has the proper ip address of the 6.0 server
In properties under server type I have
Log on to network checked
Require secure passwords checked
Just the tcip protocol checked

In  tcip settings I have just ip header compression checked. All ip info is set to auto detect.

I have played with different configurations of this setup.
I will post the log files shortly.

Here is the log file. I also confirmed with the ISP there dsl router is working and not blocking any ports. I am also starting to think my xp loose of connection problem may be due to the server blocking the ip temporally because the 98 computer is trying to log on so much and failing. They would both have the same external IP from my office. Jo just getting the 98 computer to log on is my only problem.

This log file should have the windows 98 filed log and then the xp log on that works.

I do not remember, what problems I once had with 5.6, but reading these instructions did help. Anyway, your log file reminds me the one I had during my problems.

NB!
No IP header compression
Do not use default gateway
Check TCP/IP
Use password encryption, data encryption and compression. MS-CHAP v2.

Windows 98 neended a correct patch too!
I remember, that I tried different patches before I got it working. I do not remember which one was the working one.

For Win98 you need to use dun14-98.exe

For Win98SE you should use dun14-SE.exe

Make sure you update using the correct patch for your version of Win98.

So, now I have problems too

The setup:
PPTP VPN>win98-SME6.0-Internet-SME6.0.1-02
SME6.0-Internet-SME6.0.1-02-Win98SE<PPTP VPN
PPTP VPN>Win98-Internet-SME6.0
PPTP VPN>Win98-Internet-SME6.0.1-02

Both SME-servers are doing NAT.
IpSec could not be used, as Win98 has no support for it, AFAIK.

Problem:
After first disconnected VPN connection from W98 (doesn't matter wether successful or not), it is no longer possible to connect from that computer to any SME server, because:

After a windows restart, it is possible to VPN again.
I suspect, that it is Windows fault. Unfortunately I do not have any other Win98 machines at hand to play around. Restarting servers did not help. NAT has nothing to do with it in this case.

I got the feeling, that it started after I tried to connect with a wrong password, but maybe it was a coincidence. I do not know, wether an 'unspoiled W98' would have the same problem.

I also do not know, wether VPN could work at the same time behind both SME servers.

Temporary solution:
I use TCPview to kill the hanging connection.
