Proliant 5500 Quad Xeon 550mhz SMP Problem
« on: January 15, 2004, 05:58:51 PM »
Has anyone been able to get SMP working on a quad PIII Xeon 550mhz Proliant 5500? I have tried 5.6 and 6.0 and I have been unable to SEE more than one CPU working. Works fine with quad PII Xeon 450's....

All 4 are recognized by SmartStart and the Bios. Surely there must be someone that has seen this problem before....

Thanks,

Chaloner Hale

I had this problem also.  I was able to fix it by going into smartstart and performing the erase function.  You will need to wipe out the VRAM.  When you do this, it will wipe your hard drives and reformat.  You will then need to start smartstart and make sure you choose LINUX as the operating system.  The first time I choose other, which was the problem.  E-smith 6.0 loaded as SMP but using PHPSYSINFO, it was only seeing one proc.

After I did this, E-smith now works fine

Thanks guys. Charlie, let me first see what's behind door number one before I consider what's behind door number two!!!

By the way Charlie, I still have your alpha here waiting for delivery instructions.

Well the system erase did the trick. I owe you a drink next time you are in Calgary. Sorry Charlie, door number one had just what I needed.... Now to get this puppy screaming...

Thanks boys, I really appreciate the fast and professional help I received on this.

We have Compaq ML370 and ML350, 700 and 800mhz, some duel, an some single.

The win2k AD domain i wish to replace servers 300 users, never more than 15-20 concurrent, all using win2k workstations or remote access to FTP, http, webmail.

Server 1
AD, home shares, printers

Server 2
Lotus Domino, Inotes/webmail only - no apps.

Server 3
FTP

Server 4
IIS

Server 5
Might be proxy, or something else trivial. (not at work now, cant remember)

Its not a domain i normally manage, but have been asked to provide a linux webmail solution - can u believe in the above config, users have different accounts for mail and NT logon ::(

Instead of providing a seperate webmail solution, i figured a consolidation was in order.

Would 2 x SME machines (happy to buy a license) cover the above services to the above amount of users, in regards to hardware spec?

What sort of usage does your quad machine get? our users are NOT heavy users, but casual users/students.

Only one of the above machines sits in DMZ, the mail, i have no need to stick any of the SME in the DMZ, can use the watchguard firewall to NAT any inbound mail/http/ftp.

I must provide a pilot and propsal on this before end of the week, but having little SME experince its hard to gauge whether it will handle the above services on this hardware.
