why do you need a X-windows?
it is a server and should do it's job.
i don't want my server to toggle around with that graphic-stuff...

Toyman, your question (as have most) has been addressed before, and the short answer, as Mr. Eckert pointed out, is "why bother"?  None of the required libraries are available, and adding them would be a real pain.  You want a server with X-Windows, then customize a Mandrake or Redhat box.  You want a secure server that does its job without fuss, use SME.

There are certain tools that will only run under X, such as some RAID cards which allow you to dynamically resize and configure disks, but only through an X interface. Yes, it would be handy for that type of thing.

It ought to be possible to install an e-smith X contribution, without affecting security or eating excessively into resources. Isn't an X client just a program that runs in a shell? I'm sure it can be kept separate from the other server functions. It sounds simple enough in theory.

I have been thinking about this too.  What I was hoping for was a 'thin' X server (if that is possible).  I've been reading over in the gentoo forums about creating a VNC server for X.  Then you can use ssh for security, and have a 'portable' desktop, even from the Internet.  I've been trying off and on for a few months to try to get the necessary X-sources installed, but without much sucess.

As for the 'why bother' questions.  Because I want to.    Seriously, I don't run a major site, and I'd like to be able to have a server I can run X on.  Yes I could use my desktop machine, but unfortunately I need M$ in order to do my job (let's not get into 'you could use OpenOffice...' discussions).

Slightly off topic...  I am forced to use M$ at work.  To run and X server, I installed cygwin, which has XFree86 ready-compiled - can't recommend it highly enough for those of us in M$ Hell.

I think that X on the SME server could be an good idea so that you could have the option to run an X-desktop on the server.

Surely this is not for all but I can see the advantages with it.

I guess what I was trying to get at with the mention of cygwin was that there's always a way of getting an X server on a client, no matter what OS it runs.  
Another alternative (for one-offs) is to boot a PC off a Knoppix CD or similar.  This gives you X without having to install a thing.
